Editors Corner

Greetings,
Did you know that the Bogoslof volcano in Alaska has in recent years demolished a large portion of the Aleutian island that it sits on? There has been some new land that has appeared, but not as much as has been lost. Click here

Meanwhile, on approximately the other side of the globe, there is a chunk of ice in West Antarctica about the size of Delaware that is almost ready to break away. Click here

Somewhere between those two extremes, drones have been taking some quite interesting and beautiful pictures. Click here

That's it from me. Enjoy this newsletter and have a wonderful week.

An opportunity to reach out to your community with your heart and your hands. Thursday, January 26 from 1-4 pm, at the Lions Club/ Carlson Cabin 301 W Yelm Ave This will be an afternoon of support and giving to our neighbors who find themselves, for whatever reason, living in “sub-standard” living conditions. These conditions can range from living without electricity, running water, flush toilets or homeless. We are hoping for a large turnout so that the needs of the greater Yelm community can be surveyed and understood.

Delaware-Size Iceberg Is About to Break Off from Antarctica

An icy thread measuring a mere 12 miles (20 kilometers) long is all that's anchoring a massive iceberg the size of Delaware to its home in West Antarctica, climate scientists report. If the iceberg breaks away — an event known as calving — the Larsen C Ice Shelf in Antarctica will lose more than 10 percent of its area, which amounts to about 2,000 square miles (5,000 square km), according to Project MIDAS, an Antarctic research project based in the United Kingdom.

Alaska's Bogoslof volcano blows an island to smithereens and sends ash 35,000 feet into the air in repeated eruptions

Alaska's remote Bogoslof volcano keeps erupting, and has demolished much of its Aleutian island home with a string of huge explosions. The latest event on Thursday [Jan. 5th] sent a cloud of ash and ice 35,000 feet in the air, prompting the Alaska Volcano Observatory to issue its highest alert for aircraft.

New Surprising Dead Sea Scrolls With Never-Before-Seen Language Discovered
The mysterious Dead Sea Scrolls have long fascinated archaeologists, historians and Biblical scholars. First discovered in West Jordan in 1947, near the ruins of Qumran, these ancient scrolls have delivered more surprises than expected. Now, new fragments have been unearthed and they seem to contain a never-before-seen language. When the first Dead Sea Scrolls were found, preliminary analysis showed the texts belonged to the Essenes, member of a religious sect or brotherhood that flourished in Palestine from about the 2nd century BC to the end of the 1st century AD. However, a later review of these results has raised additional questions related to the scrolls, considered one of the greatest archaeological events of the twentieth century. In 2016, more than 25 previously unpublished “Dead Sea Scroll” fragments, dating back 2,000 years and holding text from the Hebrew Bible, were brought to light, with their contents detailed in two new books.

Bezvodovka: Little Known Ancient Solar Observatory In Ukraine Reveals Its Secrets
Our ancestors were fascinated with the night sky. They watched the movements of celestial bodies, observed solar and moon eclipses and created calendars based on their astronomical observations. All around the world, we come across traces that reveal people who lived thousands of years ago were in fact skilled ancient astronomers. In a small now long forgotten ancient village of Bezvodovka in Chernihiv region, nearby the city of Ichnia, Ukraine there are several intriguing ancient mounds. The mounds occupy an area of 20 square kilometers and are believed to have been built by nomadic tribes who lived in the region during the first and second millennium B.C. The Bezvodovka mounds are of great archaeological interest and scientists are now considering they were used for astronomical observations. On one of the maps created by Fedor Schubert in 1861 there are 6 mounds depicted in a circular position. Four of them have the elongated shape. Unfortunately, only four of the mounds and one satellite mound have survived until present.
