Have you ever heard of jellyfish lasers? Apparently jellyfish proteins can be used to make something called a "polariton laser", which is a special type of laser that has previously been very difficult to create. Click here

Speaking of nature and light, have you heard that around January 6th in Ontario Canada "the air was so cold that ice crystals were forming in the air, reflecting the city's street and business lights"? Apparently one person commented that "It looked like someone from Star Trek was trying to beam people up". Click here

On a slightly different subject, did you know that the major multi-year drought in the northern half of California has been basically quenched? They got so much rain there in the first few weeks of January that some reservoirs are apparently now above average. Click here

Are you a Prepper if you store food, or Just Plain SENSIBLE?
(We say you are just full of Common Sense!)
By Teri Simpson of Optimum Preparedness

Do you have Auto Insurance? Of course you do. Health insurance? Most people do. What about Food Insurance? “Food Insurance”? you ask. Yes! Food Insurance! And if not, why not??

Most people have, at most, 1-3 days of food in their cupboards/fridge because they stop off at the grocery store several times a week. But now, no matter where you live in the US, you have most likely seen wicked bad hurricanes wipe out roadways, homes, businesses and the ability for those grocery stores to re-open or get re-supplied for weeks. You’ve seen Snowmageddon in many places across the country. And flooding, more flooding in more places than I can remember seeing. And extended power outages. And grocery store shelves empty of everything except the occasional jar of mustard or tin of anchovies (yum!)

So maybe you can see the sensibility of having a few extra cans of soup, and jars of peanut butter. But what about food shortages that are non-nature related. Do you follow world economics? The Euro, the Yen, the not-so-almighty Dollar? The relations between China and the US? The US and the Middle East? The US and terrorist factions around the world? Did you see the rioting in Venezuela caused by hyperinflation making what little food was available be unaffordable for the common person? Or non-existent? Think hyperinflation can’t happen here in the good ol’ US of A?

Many people, if their own house/home hasn’t been directly hit with a tornado, flood, hurricane, mudslide, snowstorm, CME or EMP have a tendency to think that “there’s nothing going on that would indicate the need for food storage. MY grocery store always has food.” They have a tendency to think that “nothing has happened to ME so it really isn’t anything to be concerned about”.

Talk about having a “grasshopper” mentality rather than the mentality of the wise ant who stores food all summer so they have plenty in winter.

Before-and-after photos show California storm's insane impact on water levels
Water, water everywhere! As three raging storms pummeled Northern California in early January, the lakes rose, the floodgates opened, the rivers swelled, and the waterfalls roared. The landscape that became dry and parched during five years of drought turned into a wet, soggy mess. Trickles of water became surging flows, and floodplains transformed into massive seas of water.  The gallery below of before-and-after images shows the dramatic impact the heavy rains have had on water levels at lakes, reservoirs, dams and rivers across the top half of the state.  The rainfall totals from around Northern California for early January are staggering.  Downtown San Francisco has received 5.53 inches of rain since Jan. 1. The last time the city has seen a number higher than this was 1982 when 7.53 inches fell between Jan. 1 and Jan. 11. During last year's El Niño year, S.F. had received close to three inches by this date. More impressive numbers: The coastal range mountains outside Guerneville, where roads and homes went underwater when the Russian River flooded, has received some 21 inches of rain since Jan. 4.

Europe in deep freeze, over 60 dead as new Arctic blast arrives
More than 60 people have died in Europe since the beginning of the month when cold Arctic airmass started descending south, toward the Mediterranean. The most vulnerable, and many of the victims, are homeless and migrants. The temperatures are expected to somewhat ease up over the next couple of days in parts of the region, but the weather is expected to further deteriorate by the end of the week. There are fears thousands of people could die before the winter ends. While severe winter weather and extremely low temperatures, as low as -30 °C (-22 °F) and more in some areas, are affecting much of the south-central and eastern Europe since the beginning of the month, the impact of freezing temperatures in Poland was felt as early as November 2016. Between November 1, 2016 and January 10, 2017, the toll of hypothermia deaths in the country has reached 71.

Long duration ice storm continues in central US, death toll rising
Widespread freezing rain produced by Winter Storm "Jupiter" persists for much of western Oklahoma, Kansas, northern Missouri, and western Iowa. Continuing snow is forecast to the north of the freezing rain, and to the south, heavy rain and the potential for severe thunderstorms. As of late Sunday, January 15, 2017, the death toll has risen to 6. Tens of thousands have already lost power and there is a potential millions could be affected by power outages. A significant winter storm system hit much of the central US this weekend and will continue through Monday, January 17, the National Weather Service said. More than 30 million Americans are under some type of wintry watch, and 10 million of those are under an ice storm warning. The hardest-hit states are Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri with up to 2.5 cm (1 inch) of ice coating trees, power lines and roads. There is a potential millions of residents will lose power.

In The News

CIA releases 13m pages of declassified documents online
About 13 million pages of declassified documents from the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) have been released online. The records include UFO sightings and psychic experiments from the Stargate programme, which has long been of interest to conspiracy theorists. The move came after lengthy efforts from freedom of information advocates and a lawsuit against the CIA. The full archive is made up of almost 800,000 files. They had previously only been accessible at the National Archives in Maryland. The trove includes the papers of Henry Kissinger, who served as secretary of state under presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, as well as several hundred thousand pages of intelligence analysis and science research and development. Among the more unusual records are documents from the Stargate Project, which dealt with psychic powers and extrasensory perception. Those include records of testing on celebrity psychic Uri Geller in 1973, when he was already a well-established performer.

On The Lighter Side

Photographer captures amazing 'light pillars' phenomenon in North Bay, Ont.

A northern Ontario man was surprised to wake up in the middle of the night to see beams of brightly coloured lights shooting up into the sky. "We can blame the two-year-old. He started crying at 1:30 a.m., so I got up and soothed him ... and out the window I had the perfect view of these dancing lights in the sky," said Timothy Joseph Elzinga.
