Editors Corner

Greetings,
You've most likely heard that bees are disappearing and/or dying off due to things like pesticides and parasites, but did you know that just letting fields go fallow and/or planting flowers could go a long way to mitigating this or even restoring bee populations? Click here

Speaking of fixing things, are you aware that how most people think about work is broken? Basically how we think about ourselves and others as workers may affect what kind of work is available more then we realize. Click here

On a slightly different subject, you may have heard that Windows 10 has people concerned about privacy but did you know that, if you have Windows 7 or 8, the Windows 10 upgrade could be putting itself on your computer? Click here

There's more but I will leave the rest for you to discover and enjoy.
Have a wonderful week.

The surprisingly dramatic role of nutrition in mental health

Broccoli extract found to significantly improve autism symptoms; sulforaphane molecule is powerful natural medicine
A powerful anti-cancer nutrient found naturally in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower could help significantly improve health outcomes in autistic men and boys. Research published in the journal The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveals that sulforaphane, an antioxidant compound, is capable of reversing many of the most common symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Although the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claims that there are no medications currently on the market that can treat or cure ASD, a placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind pilot study suggests otherwise. Present most richly in broccoli sprouts, sulforaphane has been shown to help drastically improve social interactions and verbal communication in ASD-diagnosed men and boys as well as reduce hyperactivity, irritability and other ASD symptoms. Conducted on 44 males aged 13 to 27, the study found that after 18 weeks of consuming sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprout extract, more than half of the men saw significant health improvements.

Windows 10 is sneaking onto Windows 7 and 8 installs without permission
Microsoft is downloading Windows 10 to Windows 7 and 8 machines, even if the user hasn’t expressed permission. A reader of The Inquirer saw that the ~BT Windows 10 folder had appeared on his system even though he hadn’t reserved a copy. He only noticed after spotting a number of failed ‘Upgrade to Windows 10’ messages in his Windows Update history. Microsoft has confirmed this is happening to The Inquirer, as well as VentureBeat and PCWorld when reached for a statement. Users have been able to opt-in to the free Windows 10 upgrade if they're running Windows 7 or 8, but apparently even if they don't, the files are being downloaded anyway. It's happening on devices which have automatic updates allowed, which we'd generally recommend to catch the latest security and stability updates for Windows. When asked about this issue, Microsoft responded by saying “For individuals who have chosen to receive automatic updates through Windows Update, we help upgradable devices get ready for Windows 10 by downloading the files they’ll need if they decide to upgrade. When the upgrade is ready, the customer will be prompted to install Windows 10 on the device.” Convenient, if you're installing Windows 7 or 8 specifically to upgrade to Windows 10. Otherwise, not so much.

82 contaminated waste bags from Fukushima washed away by typhoon floods
At least 82 bags filled with contaminated material from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant have been swept away by flood water as typhoon Etau hit Japan, officials said. TEPCO said rainwater from the nuclear plant has been leaking into the Pacific. Flooding caused by Tropical Typhoon Etau has swept at least 82 bags suspected to contain radioactive grass and other contaminated materials that had been collected at the site of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (NPP). They had been stored in a nearby town in the same prefecture, the Environment Ministry said on Friday, according to local media. Though the Ministry went on to say that most of the bags had been recovered undamaged, local media reported that only 30 of the bags had been found. Officials said the flooding had not reached the nuclear reactors damaged in the 2011 disaster, when the NPP was hit by a tsunami that had been caused by an earthquake. The nuclear disaster at Fukushima, which took place over four years ago, was dubbed the worst since the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident. Earlier on Friday, Tokyo Electric Power CO. (TEPCO), the company in charge of the damaged NPP, said that one of the holding tanks on the premises of the plant has been leaking drainage rainwater into the ocean.

Bolivia kicks out US Drug Enforcement Agency; drug crime rates immediately plummet
Most Americans have been conditioned to believe that the function of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is to reduce the manufacture, sale and trafficking of illegal drugs. However, one South American nation has thrown a huge wrench into that supposition. The government of Bolivia recently booted U.S. DEA agents out of the country, and according to a report cited by AntiMedia.com, the Bolivian government has actually managed to reduce drug manufacturing and the criminal activity associated with it since the DEA left. As reported by the Manquehue web site, dealing in drugs now represents less than 1 percent of the Andean country's gross domestic product (GDP) in a "sustained reduction" after the ejection of the DEA. The site further reported: According to data from the United Nations, Bolivia achieved a reduction in the amount of coca fields — the plant which is used as a raw material for the elaboration of cocaine — approximately in an 11% since the year 2014, and in over a 30% since 2010, which amounts to four consecutive years of decline, from over 30 thousand to some 20 thousand hectares.

Register chickens for your own safety?
Perhaps you knew it was coming: state health authorities are calling for citizens to "register" their backyard poultry and other animals with the state in order to prevent disease outbreaks. North Carolina's "state veterinarian" has launched a registration program in response to avian bird flu, the latest problem-reaction-solution proposal by nanny staters trying to get their grubby little hands into the self-reliance movement. As you might recall, North Carolina went into a fever-pitched craze after reports emerged of possible bird flu cases in the north earlier this summer. Officials almost immediately banned all live sales of poultry, and they even cancelled the traditional poultry shows that take place at the state fair every year despite the fact that no actual bird flu cases were reported in North Carolina. Call it a hunch if you like, but Doug Meckes, the head of North Carolina's poultry police, was sure that avian bird flu might reach his state at some point, so he joined other state officials to come up with a "solution" to a "problem" that was never actually a real problem in North Carolina, stating the following recently: "In planning our response for highly pathogenic avian influenza, one problem we've come across is that we can't protect birds that we don't know exist. We need to know where poultry are located so we can properly protect commercial and backyard flocks."
