MacArthur winner wants to make clean energy with fake leaves

What’s the difference between an artificial leaf and a solar panel? This isn’t the setup for a joke; it’s an actual question. Although believe me — that’s not for lack of trying. The difference is that a solar panel turns sunlight into electricity, and an artificial leaf turns sunlight into fuel. (Ba dum tss!) This is an important distinction, because as much as we humans love our electricity, we’re not very good at storing it, and that’s a problem, because electricity can be as ephemeral as your college roommate’s desire to read Infinite Jest. The nice thing about fuel is that it is an energy storage device — that is, it stores the energy from sunlight in the chemical bonds of the fuel itself. This is what plants do when they convert sunlight and CO2 into oxygen and sugar (fuel), hence the term “artificial leaf.”

Something to Contemplate

I paid a bribe: how some citizens are fighting corruption from the bottom up
How can policy-makers most effectively tackle corruption? The question is hardly new and over the years it’s one that many have given plenty of thought to. Building up a consensus on what works and why it works has proven difficult, and this has perhaps contributed to the enthusiasm for a novel, and democratic, frontline in an ancient fight. We know that increased transparency tends to make it harder for the corrupt to do their thing; we know that clear lines of accountability make it more difficult to either shirk responsibility or simply operate under the radar. We know that societies where people are trusted to “do the right thing” tend to show lower perceived levels of corruption. But when policy-makers go looking for specific lessons to draw, the toolbox can still be disappointingly bare. One thing that everyone in the anti-corruption world can, however, agree upon is that context matters. The challenge of dealing with money launderers who skilfully work their ill-gotten gains back in to a financial system is quite different to that of how to deal with a bureaucrat demanding an extra (under-the-counter) fee simply to process your driving licence application.

China's industrial pollution now creating "second-hand smog" in California
Many people in the United States lament that everything comes from China and now according to a paper released last week, so does a portion of the Western United States air pollution. Heavy emissions from industrial China is blown across the Pacific Ocean and ends up in California and neighboring states. The research shows how air pollution in the United States is impacted by China's mass production of goods for export according to the new study. The study was conducted by nine experts in their field spanning three nations and then published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The paper states "outsourcing production to China does not always relieve consumers in the United States - or for that matter many countries in the Northern Hemisphere - from the environmental impacts of air pollution."

Trans-border effects on air pollution
The main author, Jintai Lin, is a professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the School of Physics at the Peking University. During an interview, Lin shared the vision of the research to examine the trans-border effects of emissions from export industries to look at how consumption contributes to global air pollution.

This Doctor Prescribes Fruits and Veggies Instead of Drugs
Instead of suggesting surgery or drugs to remedy a patient’s problems, this doctor makes nourishing food the first priority. Although it was Hippocrates, the father of modern day medicine, who so famously stated “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine thy food,” few conventional doctors take seriously those words or wisdom and make wholesome, nutritious living the foundation of their patient’s treatment plan. But in Houston, Texas, a progressive doctor has begun prescribing fruits and vegetables instead of pharmaceutical drugs, as he and many others believe nourishing food is an essential requirement for becoming ‘well’. After years of treating patients’ modern-day ails, such as Diabetes and high blood pressure, Dr. Garth Davis discovered that diet and lifestyle are truly the best tools for helping a body become vibrantly well. As the medical director of bariatric surgery at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center, Dr. Davis no longer prescribes pharmaceutical drugs but instead dolls out recommendations for fruits and vegetables. And so far, patients have responded very well to the change.

Transaero, Russia's biggest private airline files for bankruptcy
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has given the green light to begin bankruptcy proceedings for Transaero airlines, according to sources cited by online newspaper Negotiations on a takeover of Russia's second-biggest carrier by Aeroflot have been deadlocked. According to sources, Aeroflot took a hard line refusing the Transaero consolidation. “The process has taken the toughest turn,” the media cites a federal official present at the meeting as saying. "The bankruptcy will proceed according to Russian law,” he added. The technical details of the bankruptcy procedure are currently being worked out, another source told the newspaper. "There are two considerations: first, who will inherit Transaero's [$4 billion - Ed.] debts and how much of them, second, how it will affect the airline's smaller creditors, the passengers and airline employees," the source said. Russia's federal aviation service has told Transaero to stop all ticket sales, TASS reports. According to the Russian Interfax news agency, all the negotiators have acknowledged bankruptcy as the only possible way out. A source close to the deal told Interfax there are three reasons for that.
