Editors Corner

Greetings,
Did you know that in California, because of the drought, their coastal water is cleaner? Apparently, it's because of the lack of storm runoff that would normally wash pollutants in to the sea. When it does finally rain, I would imagine it would generate quite the polluted runoff though. Click here

Speaking of natural disasters, are you aware that the Department of Homeland Security decided to move the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility, a place where they study foot-and-mouth and other deadly animal diseases, from Plum Island, New York (an isolated island which sits off of the far eastern end of New York state’s Long Island), to Manhattan, Kansas — squarely in the middle of Tornado Alley? On a slightly different subject, have you heard that North Korea says it has a wonder drug that can cure Ebola, AIDS, MERS & SARS? It would be wonderful if this is actually true. Click here

Greek government says debt owed to international banks is 'illegal, illegitimate and odious,' and should not be repaid
The current leaders of Greece were not in power when the financially strapped nation was begging the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank for bailout funds a few years ago. However, for current leaders to now declare that such loans were somehow illegal and unjust is particularly galling to some, especially those currently attempting to get Athens to pay back what it owes. And yet, that is precisely what a committee of the Syriza Party-led Greek parliament just concluded. In April, as noted by Zero Hedge, Zoi Konstantopoulou, speaker of the Greek Parliament and member of Syriza, a socialist party, claimed she had assembled a new "Truth Committee on Public Debt," whose purpose was to "investigate how much" of the country's "debt is 'illegal' with a view to writing it off."

On June 17, the committee released its preliminary findings, in which it concluded: All the evidence we present in this report shows that Greece not only does not have the ability to pay this debt, but also should not pay this debt first and foremost because the debt emerging from the Troika's arrangements is a direct infringement on the fundamental human rights of the residents of Greece. Hence, we came to the conclusion that Greece should not pay this debt because it is illegal, illegitimate, and odious.

Why are we building a research center full of deadly diseases in the tornado capital of the world?
Here are some things that do not mix, in no particular order: Spilled gasoline & casually discarded matches Peanut butter & mayonnaise/ketchup/mustard/anything not jelly Godzilla & any major metropolitan area Highly toxic airborne pathogens & TORNADOES With that last one in mind, it may seem especially strange that the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility is being moved from an isolated end of Long Island to Manhattan, Kan. — squarely in the middle of Tornado Alley. Here’s the scoop from Slate:

The United States eradicated foot-and-mouth disease from its borders in 1929. The virus, deadly to livestock, persists in more than 100 countries, though, and travels with ease. It is able to hitchhike on shoes, clothes, and tires. Airborne, it can travel almost 40 miles overland and almost 190 over open ocean. … If the foot-and-mouth virus—or any other airborne danger—escaped from the lab, the air currents would likely carry it beyond where it could cause harm.

One benefit to California’s drought: Cleaner beaches
Yo, dudes and dudettes, it’s time to start getting amped, not aggro, about California’s ongoing drought. Here’s the deal: Less rain means that less gnarly storm water flows back into the ocean. So don’t be a paddlepuss, the water’s actually quite nice.

The Los Angeles Times has the story:

California’s lingering drought has continued to have at least one silver lining: cleaner water along the coast, according to a new report. Water quality along Southern California’s coast improved last year amid the record-low rainfall largely because lower amounts of storm runoff flowed down to the area, according to the annual Beach Report Card released Wednesday by Heal the Bay, an environmental group. Ninety-four percent of Los Angeles County’s beaches – long among the most polluted in the state – received A or B grades for the high-traffic summer months, according to the report. That percentage was up 4% from last year’s report and up 10% for the county’s summer average for the last five years. …

Here's More Proof Earth Is in Its 6th Mass Extinction
Diverse animals across the globe are slipping away and dying as Earth enters its sixth mass extinction, a new study finds. Over the last century, species of vertebrates are dying out up to 114 times faster than they would have without human activity, said the researchers, who used the most conservative estimates to assess extinction rates. That means the number of species that went extinct in the past 100 years would have taken 11,400 years to go extinct under natural extinction rates, the researchers said. Much of the extinction is due to human activities that lead to pollution, habitat loss, the introduction of invasive species and increased carbon emissions that drive climate change and ocean acidification, the researchers said. "Our activities are causing a massive loss of species that has no precedent in the history of humanity and few precedents in the history of life on Earth," said lead researcher Gerardo Ceballos, a professor of conservation ecology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and a visiting professor at Stanford University. Ceballos said that, ever since he was a child, he struggled to understand why certain animals went extinct. In the new study, he and his colleagues focused on the extinction rates of vertebrates, which include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fishes.

N. Korea says its wonder drug can cure Ebola, AIDS, MERS & SARS
Scientists around the world can apparently hang up their lab coats, because North Korea says it has found a cure for Ebola, AIDS, MERS, and SARS. The claim is a tough pill to swallow, however, and is likely to be met with a generous dose of skepticism. For decades, researchers have devoted their careers to finding cures for the diseases, but it turns out Pyongyang has secretly had the solution for 19 years. That's right – the country apparently first produced the disease-fighting drug in 1996, according to pro-North Korea website Minjok Tongshin. Pyongyang has failed, however, to provide any proof to its lofty claims. Although the world's best scientists couldn't crack the code, it seems the cure wasn't actually all that complicated. A natural herb, some plant food, and a few elements were apparently all that were needed to solve a few of science's biggest puzzles. The injection drug Kumdang-2 was developed from ginseng grown from fertilizer mixed with rare-earth elements, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). It even has “micro-quantities of gold and platinum” thrown in, the drug's website says. The drug is really convenient, because it's supposedly a cure-all for all four diseases.

Something Worth Knowing

One Simple, Low-Cost Way to Stay Cool This Summer
Seems like just yesterday we were groaning over our high heating bills. Now with the full heat of summer about to hit, we’re looking for ways to keep ourselves cooler and make our A/C use more efficient. Hanging blackout curtains is one of the cheapest, easiest solutions imaginable. Blackout curtains are also known as ”thermal drapes” for a reason. They’re ideal for blocking light and heat from windows that get strong sun. And the best part is that contrary to popular belief, blackout curtains do not have to be black. They don’t even have to be curtains. Types of Blackout Coverage Simple though rather stark, roll-down blackout shades will keep out sunshine if they are properly fitted to cover the whole window. You may be able to have them custom cut to your specs. Blackout liners may be used with your existing window treatments. Not only will they shut out the warmth of the sun, they’ll also protect your curtains from fading. If you’re going for the real deal, you can purchase blackout drapes readymade in various lengths. However, DIY and frugal types take note: curtains are one of the easiest sewing projects imaginable. Tailoring them yourself will let you get the precise dimensions and the look you like.
