Editors Corner

We open this newsletter with "The 10 corporations that control everything". I have always thought it was interesting that so few corporations controlled so much. And it seems, as time goes by, that number continues to get smaller. Click here

From corporations to technology, have you ever wondered why no-one has invented a self-powering lawn mower? I mean, all that grass should be useful for something other then putting in big piles somewhere, right? And it would be even better if said lawnmower could not only use grass as fuel, but it could mow the lawn all by itself. Well, there is a company working on just that. Click here

Moving from lawns to water, did you know that wolves can change rivers? The way they flow, how much they meander, how many pools there are. Most likely you are wondering how. It's rather interesting, and a video we have in this weeks issue explains this. Click here

This week we wrap up our editors corner with a wonderful picture that will most likey make you smile. Click here

13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do
Mentally strong people have healthy habits. They manage their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in ways that set them up for success in life. Check out these things that mentally strong people don’t do so that you too can become more mentally strong.

1. They Don’t Waste Time Feeling Sorry for Themselves
Mentally strong people don’t sit around feeling sorry about their circumstances or how others have treated them. Instead, they take responsibility for their role in life and understand that life isn’t always easy or fair.

2. They Don’t Give Away Their Power
They don’t allow others to control them, and they don’t give someone else power over them. They don’t say things like, “My boss makes me feel bad,” because they understand that they are in control over their own emotions and they have a choice in how they respond.

3. They Don’t Shy Away from Change
Mentally strong people don’t try to avoid change. Instead, they welcome positive change and are willing to be flexible. They understand that change is inevitable and believe in their abilities to adapt.

The Scary New Evidence on BPA-Free Plastics
Update (3/3/14): After this story went to press, the US Food and Drug Administration published a paper finding that BPA was safe in low doses. However, the underlying testing was done on a strain of lab rat known as the Charles River Sprague Dawley, which doesn't readily respond to synthetic estrogens, such as BPA. And, due to laboratory contamination, all of the animals—including the control group—were exposed to this chemical. Academic scientists say this raises serious questions about the study's credibility. Stay tuned for more in-depth reporting on the shortcomings of the FDA's most recent study.

Each night at dinnertime, a familiar ritual played out in Michael Green's home: He'd slide a stainless steel sippy cup across the table to his two-year-old daughter, Juliette, and she'd howl for the pink plastic one. Often, Green gave in. But he had a nagging feeling. As an environmental-health advocate, he had fought to rid sippy cups and baby bottles of the common plastic additive bisphenol A (BPA), which mimics the hormone estrogen and has been linked to a long list of serious health problems. Juliette's sippy cup was made from a new generation of BPA-free plastics, but Green, who runs the Oakland, California-based Center for Environmental Health, had come across research suggesting some of these contained synthetic estrogens, too.

How Wolves Change Rivers

In The News

Surge in babies born without brains in Washington State
There is something seriously wrong in the fertile Yakima Valley region of Washington. A surging number of babies are being born with major birth defects, and the reasons why are eluding state health officials. As reported by CNN, a nurse in the area, Sara Barron, was the first to report on a particularly horrifying condition: anencephaly -- a condition in which babies are born without much of their brain and skull. "I was just stunned," she told the network in an interview. "Three in a couple-of-month period of time... that's unheard of, and they have such tragic, terrible outcomes." Her shocking finding and report eventually prompted an investigation by the state health department. Investigators found some disturbing results. Over a three-year period, there were 23 cases concentrated in three southern Washington counties -- Yakima, Benton and Franklin. That's a rate (8.4 per 10,000 live births) that is four times the national average (2.1 per 10,000 live births), CNN reported. What could be causing such a phenomenon? Is it just one of those weird coincidences, or is something more sinister at play? Mandy Stahre, with the Washington State Department of Health, conducted the investigation into the high rates of anencephaly. She says she and other investigators are stumped.

Sustainable Housing

Cabin fever: Are tiny houses the new American dream?
Tiny houses have seemingly taken over the landscape of aspirational real estate, and not just for the green-minded. When it comes to choosing a compact cottage of one’s own, tiny house fetishists need only adopt the guiding principle of sage philosopher Ludacris: What’s your fantasy? Ranging from impossibly twee to space-age minimalist, with rustic cabins in snow-covered woods lying somewhere in between, there’s seemingly no limit of miniature dwellings to fill the Pinterests of a growing audience. The prolific Tiny House Swoon website, for example, offers pages upon pages of shelter porn for those who dream of downsizing: a fairy-tale treehouse in Germany; a stark West Virginia cabin built entirely of recycled materials; and a transparent cube unit in Switzerland that may as well have been abandoned by an extremely adorable Martian. What’s the appeal of a home the size of a toolshed? You can’t scroll through a page of design sites such as Inhabitat and Dwell without hitting at least one. Graham Hill, founder of TreeHugger, launched LifeEdited, an online publication about downsized living inspired by his own 420 square-foot apartment, in 2010.

South Korea's Award-Winning Endangered Species Research Center

Seoul, Korea-based Samoo Architects & Engineers (SAMOO) recently proposed a design for the National Research Center for Endangered Species that will be constructed in Yeongyang-gun, one of the cleanest environmental areas in Korea. In the winning design, the firm proposed a three-part structure that will blend harmoniously within the surrounding environment while functioning as a central point for research regarding rare plants and animals in the country.

Meet the Lawn Roomba
Do you hate mowing the lawn? You’re not alone — it’s one of the most dreaded, feared and loathed tasks in my neighborhood, and I suspect we’re not the only ones. Mowing the lawn is tedious, time-consuming, sweat-inducing and filthy. Worse yet, those little blades of fiendish grass seem to stick to you for an eternity after finishing the job, making you constantly come over all itchy just when you think you got rid of the last of them. Some people like to go the riding mower route for more comfort, but that’s really only a feasible option if you have a big, uncomplicated lawn and garden. At my house, where the garden and the yard blend with each other in curves, fits and spurts, a riding mower wouldn’t fit in most places without damaging the plants, and the yard is just too small to justify using one even if I wanted to try. (Though I have thought about it, watching that guy down the road smugly enjoy his on a hot day after I’ve spent two hours trudging behind a spewing, sputtering push mower — the sight also makes me wonder if I can get a San Francisco plumber to build me a portable outdoor shower to drizzle cool water on me while I work.)

Economy Watch

“Have An Exit Plan”
Matt Drudge, owner and publisher of the “Drudge Report,” recently tweeted a cryptic warning to his readers, “Have an exit plan.” Here is how Susan Duclos reported the story in “The economic indicators are bad, markets, the weakening dollar, banks preventing large withdrawals, news of China banks halting all cash transfers, in fact, economies across the globe are failing, and much more has led to a simple, four word Tweet from American political commentator and the creator and editor of the Drudge Report, Matt Drudge, that chillingly states ‘Have an exit plan.’” Duclos also wrote, “Drudge’s words should be a warning to everyone, it is coming, it is almost here and ‘have an exit plan’ ready.”

See the report here:
Have An Exit Plan

The Drudge Report is one of the finest news sources on the Web. Matt is well connected. This is the first time I have known of him to write such a warning–as mysterious as it was. No, I do not know what Matt learned to cause him to write this warning; but I do believe we should all pay attention to it.
