Editors Corner

This week we open with a new blog post by Rene Westbrook on the subject of time. The movie she references, she called "In Time". I've seen "In Time" (the one made in there another one?) and I'm fairly sure that's not the movie she's describing. Maybe the one she's describing is called "About Time" (made in 2013)? I haven't seen this one, so I'm not sure, but the description I've read about it sounds about right. Click here

Speaking of time, isn't it about time that companies labeled GMO foods and foods with GMO ingredients? A lot of people have been trying to get companies to do this, but the food industry appears to be against it. Sadly the Grocery Manufacturers Association has apparently come up with an evil plan that may kill the idea of GMO labeling once and for all. Click here

Have you heard about this "Power play" by the utility companies to get solar users to sell their excess energy back to the company at the wholesale price? I don't honestly know if this is bad or not since I'm fairly sure that most energy that is generated (usually by large generating stations) is sold at wholesale prices. And those wholesale prices, at least according to the utility companies, is what keeps the prices from going too high. But on the consumer side, where the solar panels would be, it may not seem to be fair. Click here

The climate is changing, we've all heard about it and most likely seen and/or felt the effects of the changes. Well Zaria Forman is making paintings about it and her paintings are quite realistic. If you haven't seen her paintings before, I recommend you check them out. Click here

Well, that's it from me for now. Don't forget to support our advertisers so we can continue to bring you this wonderful newsletter.

In and out of "Time"
By Rene Westbrook

A few nights ago I watched a sweet film called "In Time" about a family whose male members had the ability to go back in time. The premise began with the son on his 21 birthday. His father told him he could change the outcome of past situations by going into a dark closet. Once there all he had to do is think of a moment he wanted to return to and make the appropriate changes. Presto, this incredulous young man found himself in sort of a "Groundhog Day" but with a better outcome. This delightful film opened the door to many speculations about the possibility of returning to a moment that can be altered forever.  I got to thinking about what events I would want a "do over"?  To my surprise, there were only two for myself and one for my daughter.  In reflection it seemed I had not much to regret and yet, how delicious it would be to alter timelines.  I contemplated the cornerstone teachings of the last 25 years about consciousness and energy creating reality.  And of course it is consciousness that moves in and out of time without limitations. Scientists are now postulating that even death has no domain over consciousness and that it lives on and possibly exists on multiple levels at the same time.

Officials reject concerns over 500 percent radiation increase on California beach
Health officials in California are now telling residents not to worry after a video uploaded to the internet last month seemed to show high levels of radiation at a Pacific Coast beach. The video, “Fukushima radiation hits San Francisco,” has been viewed nearly half-a-million times since being uploaded to YouTube on Christmas Eve, and its contents have caused concern among residents who fear that nuclear waste from the March 2011 disaster in Japan may be arriving on their side of the Pacific Ocean. Throughout the course of the seven-minute-long clip, a man tests out his Geiger counter radiation detector while walking through Pacifica State Beach outside of San Francisco. At times, the monitor on the machine seems to show radiation of 150 counts-per-minute, or the equivalent of around five times what is typically found in that type of environment.

Power play: Utilities want solar users to pay up
The explosive growth of solar power -- a new rooftop system was installed every four minutes in 2013 -- has utility companies pushing in several states to scale back what they call unfair rate advantages that solar users have long received. The debate centers on net metering, which requires utility companies to credit customers for solar energy that they generate in excess of their own usage. The credits were part of financial incentives to invest in solar energy. Policies for net metering, which is used in 43 states, vary from state to state, but most credits are set at the local retail price for electricity. That bothers utilities, which contend that the retail price is set too high, resulting in excessive credits to solar users. Utilities want credits set by wholesale prices, which are much lower than retail. "The principal issue is making sure everyone is paying a fair price for what they use," said Ted Carver, CEO and chairman of Edison International, the parent company of utility Southern California Edison. "We don't care where or who we buy the power from, but it should be purchased at the wholesale price." But some experts say the mere fact that utilities—which generate $360 billion a year in energy sales—are battling with solar indicates the threat it now poses to them.

GMO labeling to be outlawed? Grocery Manufacturers Association unveils deviously evil plan to silence us all
The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) is scheming to criminalize state-by-state GMO labeling laws in a deviously evil effort to keep consumers ignorant of what they're eating. Remember, the GMA is the same organization that got caught running an illegal money laundering scheme in Washington state, secretly funneling money from big food manufacturers into a campaign to defeat GMO labeling initiative I-522. Now the GMA is pushing legislation at the federal level to not only outlaw GMO labeling laws at the state level, but also to get the FDA to declare GMOs as "natural" so that foods made with GMOs can claim "all natural" on their labels. A petition filed with the FDA by the GMA states, "GMA will be filing a Citizen Petition early in 2014 that asks the FDA to issue a regulation authorizing foods containing ingredients derived from biotechnology to be labeled 'natural.'" "Monsanto and giant food companies are scheming behind the scenes to introduce a bill in Congress that would kill mandatory state GMO labeling efforts and replace it with a gutted version of a bill to preempt states' rights and give the illusion of serious regulation," reports Food Democracy Now, which also calls the plan "devious" in nature.
