Editors Corner

This week we have an interesting idea coming from the gardening section, an article about heating your house with compost. I knew compost could get quite warm, but I hadn't considered using it to heat a house or greenhouse. Click here

From gardening and compost to food. You may already know that California has a drought going on, but did you know that it is one of the worst disasters the state has faced in decades? One that is set to seriously impact national food prices in the coming months? Click here

Speaking of food, some creatures have shown themselves to be quite intelligent when going after a tasty morsel. But just how intelligent? Alex Taylor puts a crow through a complex puzzle solving exercise. Watch as this crow goes through and solves the puzzle. Click here

On a different subject, have you ever wondered about the world population and how a world map might look if it was evenly divided up (one color per billion, for example)? Well we have just that and much more just in case you were curious. Click here

Well that's about it from me for now.

Damaged DNA Response - DDR Prime

Ever heard of apoptosis? Apoptosis is the remarkable process of natural cell renewal in our bodies. The following link will explain the science of how it works: click here Apoptosis keeps our organs and tissue healthy. But what happens when our DNA is damaged and apoptosis does not come to the rescue? The result is that damaged cells become immortal and continue to replicate in their damaged form.—The result can be tumors and cancer. DDR Prime, a blend of potent essential oils has been proven to promote apoptosis. Further, it has been proven to kill cancer cells. Click here to see the research The most amazing thing about DDR Prime is that it is simple a blend of Frankincense, Thyme, Wild Orange, Lemongrass, Summer Savory, Niaouli and Clove. DDR prime can be used topically or internally. For those of us over 50, taking DDR Prime as a preventative is a very smart idea.

Something Worth Knowing

Heat Up Your House With Compost
When compost breaks down, it provides a lot of heat as a byproduct—so much heat that you can actually cook with it. Many people have long wondered why that heat should go to waste, such as students at the University of Vermont—so they came up with a solution. Loop coil heating systems, where tubes are run through the compost pile to allow water to pass through it, heating the water so it can be turned to various purposes around the home, garden, barn, and stable. Pretty cool, or should we say warm, right? Using compost for heat represents an excellent method of trapping what would otherwise be waste heat, and it’s totally free. Here’s how it works: you start by building a large, sloping compost pile, and running appropriately durable tubing through it, arranged in loops to increase the surface area of tubing exposed to the heat at the interior of the pile. As you build up the compost, the inside can reach anywhere from 130 to 160 degrees, well above the recommended heat for cooking and bathing. The nice, toasty water can be routed straight into your house, where it can do a number of fantastic things.

Something to Contemplate

Past Present And Future Exist All At Once - Unravelling Secrets Of Quantum Physics
With the discovery of the crucial, though, unexpected link between space and time, Einstein realized that these two things could no longer be thought of as separate things. They are fused together and form the continuum (manifold) of space-time, viewed as a four-dimensional vector space. Suddenly, he realized something unbelievable, namely that our understanding of past, present and future and the sharp difference we see between them - may only be an illusion. "The distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion," he said. At first, he wasn't particularly thrilled with the unified spacetime idea and dismissed new four-dimensional geometry proposed by Hermann Minkowski, as "superfluous" pedantry but he eventually accepted the idea and so must we. As Arthur Schopenhauer expressed, "the most insignificant present has over the most significant past the advantage of reality" and such a belief cannot be so easily dismissed. Naturally, this illusion - our understanding of past, present and future - is very convincing for us, but it's still an illusion, we live with every day, every moment, continuously.

Introducing the first bank of feces
A new nonprofit called OpenBiome is hoping to do for fecal transplants what blood banks have done for transfusions. It’s a kind of Brown Cross. And it’s an idea whose time has come. Recent trials testing transplants of fecal microbes from the healthy to the sick have been so promising that people are attempting dangerous do-it-yourself fecal transplants by enema, for lack of access to authorized medical procedures. Graduate students Carolyn Edelstein and Mark B. Smith got the idea for OpenBiome after a friend had trouble getting a fecal transplant to treat an infection with Clostridium difficile. The bacterium causes dangerous, even fatal, diarrhea and in an increasing number of cases is resistant to antibiotics. People tend to get C. difficile infections after antibiotics or chemotherapy has knocked out helpful bacteria, allowing what is normally a background player to take over. Transplants of fecal bacteria from healthy donors can help reset the microbiome, the mix of bacteria in the body, and crowd out C. difficile. A 2011 review of 317 patients treated for C. difficile found that fecal transplants cleared up infections in 92 percent of patients. And more recent research showed that taking a round of pills containing bacteria isolated from fecal matter (without the feces itself) resolved C. difficile infections in all of 32 patients treated.

EU to approve new GM crop, ignoring majority members’ opposition
The European Commission is set to authorize the growing of genetically modified maize on European soil, despite 19 member states voting against the move, highlighting the “absurd” rules of weighted votes in the EU. In a debate on Tuesday, 19 EU member states indicated that they would vote against the authorization of genetically modified maize because of health and environmental concerns and opposition in the European Parliament. But because of the so-called comitology rules of the EU, their votes will be insufficient to overturn the decision of bigger member states that support the introduction of insect resistant Pioneer 1507. The UK and Spain are both in favor of GM crops, while Germany abstained and France is staunchly against their introduction. European health Commissioner Tonio Borg said on Tuesday that the commission is now legally bound to approve the crop. Borg insisted that extensive research since 2001 had shown the crop was safe. Britain has argued that without GM crops, Europe risks becoming “the museum of world farming,” and that there is a clear scientific case for GM, while Spain has said that its farmers need to be able to compete with non-EU nations that can grow GM produce.

Chick-fil-A to Stop Using Chickens Raised on Antibiotics.. in 5 Years
In yet another victory for food rights activists, fast food chain Chick-fil-A has agreed to stop sourcing chickens fed antibiotics following overwhelming pressure from critics. “…we are collaborating with national and regional poultry suppliers to build a supply chain based on chickens raised with no antibiotics,” Chick-fil-A stated in a press release. “We are asking suppliers to work with the USDA to verify that antibiotics are never administered from the hatchery to the processing plant.” The plan, Chick-fil-A says, is to “serve chicken raised without antibiotics in all Chick-fil-A restaurants, nationwide, within five years.” Sourcing chickens fed antibiotics is a revoltingly common practice that helps fatten chickens rapidly for production. Undoubtedly, the prime mover urging Chick-fil-A’s decision was Vani Hari, AKA the Food Babe. “For over a year and a half,” Hari says she’s been consulting the chain “on the top priorities of consumers and on healthy ingredient changes.”

DNA Analysis Of Paracas Elongated Skulls Released. The Results Prove They Were Not Human
Paracas is a desert peninsula located within the Pisco Province in the Ica Region, on the south coast of Peru. It is here were Peruvian archaeologist, Julio Tello, made an amazing discovery in 1928, a massive and elaborate graveyard containing tombs filled with the remains of individuals with the largest elongated skulls found anywhere in the world. These have come to be known as the 'Paracas skulls'. In total, Tello found more than 300 of these elongated skulls, which are believed to date back around 3,000 years. A DNA analysis has now been conducted on one of the skulls and expert Brien Foerster has released preliminary information regarding these enigmatic skulls. It is well-known that most cases of skull elongation are the result of cranial deformation, head flattening, or head binding, in which the skull is intentionally deformed by applying force over a long period of time. It is usually achieved by binding the head between two pieces of wood, or binding in cloth. However, while cranial deformation changes the shape of the skull, it does not alter its volume, weight, or other features that are characteristic of a regular human skull. The Paracas skulls, however, are different.
