Editors Corner

This week is our "small" newsletter week so we just have a few things.  For those that missed the Rainier Vail Neighborhood Groups announcement in our September 7th edition, we have included it again in this one. Click here

On a different note, we have an awesome story about the RSE community in Argentina and the wonderful power of focus! Click here

Speaking of focus, we have a story about western scientists imaging the brains of Buddhist monks while they meditate. These tests help the scientists understand how meditation effects a persons emotional state. Click here

Also in Science Watch, scientists are looking at the idea of selectively removing memories from the human brain. Click here  The article suggests that this may be able to help people with drug cravings or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

We also have an interesting article about Factory Farms and Super Bugs.  If you eat meat, you may want to check this out! Click here

If that's not enough, there are wonderful events listed in our Community Calendar and Triad Theater calendar of events. Check them out!

Lastly, some of you may have noticed that the "Click here" links in last weeks Editors Corner didn't work.  That was due to a technical glitch.  We keep an archive of all our newsletters on our website,  The links in the Editors Corner of that edition on our website have been fixed and work correctly.  Click here

See you next week.

We Won the Case
No Motor Cross in Rainier
Rainier Vail Neighborhood Group (RVNG) - September 3rd, 2013

We Won the Case - It is Finished
No Motor Cross Track in Rainier!
Let's acknowledge all the people who spoke out to oppose the racetrack! Our rural peace is intact!

10% of us donated enough to pay HALF OF THE LEGAL BILL that kept this racetrack out of rural Thurston County. The Ruling equally benefits all of us! We are asking you, as part of us: Will you donate and help to pay off the remaining $29,000 legal costs? This decision set a PRECEDENT for rural residents in Thurston County - that the interest of one property owner cannot infringe on the rights of many. This upholds our QUALITY OF LIFE and our peaceful environment in a rural community. This maintains our PROPERTY VALUES, that would have declined.

Stayed tuned for an upcoming celebration

Something to Contemplate

Awesome news from student in Argentina

The following was received by us in an email from several MC2020 readers and the picture is also shown with a similar story in the RSE newsletter:

"There was a HUGE fire that affected Cordoba - Argentina, not only the forests but also the homes and properties of lots of people.  The firemen couldn't stop it, 450 people had to be evacuated.  The amazing thing is that one front of the fire stopped and extinguished exactly on the fence line of a property where there is settled a community of RSE students from Argentina called Yacanto.  Together they all focused on stopping the fire.
When I saw the picture it blew my mind!"

Something Worth Knowing

CDC Reveals Scary Truth About Factory Farms and Superbugs
Nearly 80 percent of antibiotics consumed in the United States go to livestock farms. Meanwhile, antibiotic-resistant pathogens affecting people are on the rise. Is there a connection here? No need for alarm, insists the National Pork Producers Council. Existing regulations "provide adequate safeguards against antibiotic resistance," the group insists on its site.  It even enlists the Centers for Disease Control in its effort to show that "animal antibiotic use is safe for everyone," claiming that the CDC has found "no proven link to antibiotic treatment failure in humans due to antibiotic use in animals." So move along, nothing to see here, right? Not so fast. On Monday, the CDC came out with a new report called "Antibiotic resistance threats in the United States, 2013," available here.  And far from exonerating the meat industry and its voracious appetite for drugs, the report spotlights it as a driver of resistance.

Science Watch

The Monk in the Lab
For the last 15 years I have engaged in a series of conversations with Western scientists. We have exchanged views on topics ranging from quantum physics and cosmology to compassion and destructive emotions. I have found that while scientific findings offer a deeper understanding of such fields as cosmology, it seems that Buddhist explanations -- particularly in the cognitive, biological and brain sciences -- can sometimes give Western-trained scientists a new way to look at their own fields. It may seem odd that a religious leader is so involved with science, but Buddhist teachings stress the importance of understanding reality, and so we should pay attention to what scientists have learned about our world through experimentation and measurement. Similarly, Buddhists have a 2,500-year history of investigating the workings of the mind. Over the millenniums, many practitioners have carried out what we might call ''experiments'' in how to overcome our tendencies toward destructive emotions.

Study suggests possibility of selectively erasing unwanted memories
The human brain is exquisitely adept at linking seemingly random details into a cohesive memory that can trigger myriad associations—some good, some not so good. For recovering addicts and individuals suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), unwanted memories can be devastating. Former meth addicts, for instance, report intense drug cravings triggered by associations with cigarettes, money, even gum (used to relieve dry mouth), pushing them back into the addiction they so desperately want to leave. Now, for the first time, scientists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have been able to erase dangerous drug-associated memories in mice and rats without affecting other more benign memories. The surprising discovery, published last week online ahead of print by the journal Biological Psychiatry, points to a clear and workable method to disrupt unwanted memories while leaving the rest intact.
