Editors Corner

Greetings dear readers,
Last week I was in a bit of a hurry to get my weekend started as you may have noticed from my hastily written Editors Corner. I apologize for that Editors Corner. I didn't give it, and consequentially you, my readers, the time and attention it, and you, deserved.

Also, I have had some feedback letting me know that my newsletters have gotten a little unbalanced, more left brain analytical, less right brain creative. This week, with a little help (ok, maybe a bit more then "a little"), I have attempted to put together a more balanced newsletter.

And with that, we come to this, our current newsletter, which is loaded with all kinds of good stuff.

We start this newsletter with an except from a book, The Art of Healing, where Bernie S. Siegel, M.D. imparts the wisdom he has gained attempting to answer "The Big Questions". Click here

Speaking of wisdom, have you read Rene Westbrooks newest blog post? It's called The Exponential Power of the Legacy Walk.  If you haven't read it yet, I encourage you to do so. Click here

We also have a submission from Teri Simpson where she imparts her most recent piece of wisdom...okay, maybe not wisdom but this is worth knowing!  Puget Sound Energy is giving away a free replacement refrigerator to anyone that has a fridge built in 1992 or older.  There are 3 sizes available while supplies last.  Free delivery of the new fridge and free removal of the old one. Click here

Speaking of things that are worth knowing, did you know that due to the government shutdown, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is having to look at the likelihood of shutting itself down?  They would still be minimally staffed, at least for the time being. Click here

If you are feeling a little down about that, maybe this will help. We have a beautiful song, "Glorious" by Stephanie Mabey. Definitely worth listening to if you haven't heard it before. Click here

We also have some other wonderful things, like some awesome pictures of weather at various times of the year in Australia. Click here
And this little white lion cub at Serbia Zoo. Click here

There is, of course, more. Some of it wonderful, some of it not so much. But I will leave the rest for you to explore.  Click around and enjoy!

See you next week!

P.S. The Salida Open House has been postponed again until some time in November, this time due to lots of wasps enjoying the grapes in the holding bins. Click here

Yesterday I went to get my driver’s license renewed. I anticipated lines and the usual long wait with everybody wishing they could get out of there, so I wasn’t looking forward to it. But soon after I arrived, a woman at the counter called my number. I looked around, surprised. Many of these people had waited much longer than I had; it had to be somebody else’s turn. But she called out my number a second time, so I went up.

As soon as I got to the counter, a smile of recognition spread across her face. It turned out that I had operated on her mother many years ago. We had such a wonderful time talking and she shared how well her mother was doing. When I left she was still thanking me for helping her mother to heal. She wasn’t referring to the surgery or the chemotherapy. She was talking about her mother’s life. Imagine that. It wasn’t about her physical body or the disease; it was about the things that made her mother’s life meaningful. When I left there, I felt so good. Our meeting had not been an accident or by chance. It was a gift. There are no coincidences.

What I am about to share — what led me to a new understanding of the nature of life — stems not from my beliefs but from my personal experience and my work with patients and their families. My attitude of keeping an open mind allowed me to gain much more from my experiences and become a better healer than those in the profession who say they can’t accept what they can’t understand or explain. If we don’t seek knowledge, we don’t learn; we lose the opportunity to live our lives in a creative way. So I never stopped asking the important questions. What do I mean by the important questions?

The questions we must ask are: How does the invisible become visible? What part of our being still sees when we leave our physical body in a near-death experience? How do we intuitively know what plans our unconscious mind is creating? How do clairvoyants and psychics communicate with people and animals, whether distant or dead? How does the community of cells in the body speak to the conscious mind about its needs and health? And what is the language of creation and the soul?

Yelm Food Co-op
Fourth Annual "Gift of Gobble"

This Thanksgiving the Yelm Food Co-op will once again contribute to our community’s ongoing work of nourishing families in need through a project called "Feed a Family - Give the Gift of Gobble."  To raise the needed funds, donations of any dollar amount are being accepted at the Yelm Food Co-op between October 10 and November 30, 2013. Last year the project raised enough money to feed 86 families. This year the Co-op has set a goal of feeding 100 families.  In addition to accepting individual community members’ contributions, project volunteers will call on area businesses for donations.  Just $50 will provide all the ingredients for a full Thanksgiving feast that feeds a family of six or more: a naturally-grown turkey, organic vegetables and potatoes, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls, pie fixings and more.

The Mountain News
Yelm writer pens an account of her search for the feminine in a man’s world
by Bruce A. Smith

Cate Montana, a Yelm resident since 1989, has written a book exploring her life-long quest to find a healthy balance between power, success and her femininity. In my assessment, a read of Unearthing Venus, reveals that Cate has blossomed wonderfully on all levels.  To begin, her book is being published by Watkins Press in five countries – the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada and the United States. Such a literary achievement is understandable given that Cate is a woman who excelled as a television videographer for ABC Sports and covered the Olympics, Monday Night Football and other decidedly masculine sporting events.  “I was taught to think like a guy and succeed in a guy’s world,” she told the Mountain News.  But she intuitively knew there was more to life than the fast cars, big money, and plenty of exciting lovers.  “I’ve had several turning points in my life, and one of them happened when I was 30, just after I got my first divorce. I just knew there had to be more to life.”

The Exponential Power of the Legacy Walk
By Rene Westbrook

Walking is an automatic and daily occurrence for most of us on the planet, however there is one man who has walked this Earth for the sake of the seemingly endless pleasure of making the environment the monumental focus of his purposeful walk.  And, should this one fact be too difficult to understand, this clear thinking individual also stopped talking for 17 years as well. The biology of conviction encapsulated John Francis' singular journey into a new world.  He neither rode in cars, trains, planes, nor any motorized vehicles because of one tragic oil spill that he witnessed in California in 1971.  So powerful was this experience, he decided that something had to be done.  Soon, this man in his late twenties began walking and eventually stopped talking about the reasons for his decision. Now many years later, Dr. Francis is a leading authority in environmental activist making a difference. Imagine shutting up for 17 years and walking the Earth for 22 years could make such an impact on everything around you.!

Puget Sound Energy Wants to Upgrade Your Old Refrigerator for Free!
Submitted by Teri Simpson of Optimum Preparedness

A friend tipped me off about how Puget Sound Energy (PSE) will replace your '92 or older fridge for free. There is a limited number of them (but a lot of them). Immediately below is the link to the PSE website and then below that are the particulars.
- Teri Simpson

Older appliances use far more energy than new efficient models and could be racking up extra costs on your electric bill each year. For a limited time we'll be rounding up old, inefficient refrigerators and replacing them with a limited number of ENERGY STAR® qualified models for free. You heard that right: FREE! There is no cost for the new energy-saving refrigerators, their delivery or the removal and recycling of your old appliance. Start the process now by calling 1-877-341-2314 (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

What kind of free refrigerator will I get? »
You'll receive a free ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerator of similar cubic feet as your current model.* Your new, free refrigerator will be a basic, white, single-door, top-freezer ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerator that uses less energy, runs more quietly and can lower electric bills. *15, 18, or 21 cu ft. models available only.

The NRC and the 2013 Shutdown – Next Steps
Posted Oct. 4th
As you may know, the NRC has been operating largely normally this week using “carryover” funds in the absence of an appropriation. Based on our current projections, however, we do not believe the agency can continue to operate beyond the middle of next week. In the absence of action by Congress and the President, we expect to begin notifying employees whether they are excepted (non-furloughed) or non-excepted (furloughed). Most of the excepted employees are the resident inspectors and the Headquarters Operations Officers. Individuals assigned as excepted employees will perform the excepted functions listed in Management Directive and Handbook 4.5 if the agency shuts down.

Matchstick-sized sensor can record your private chats
EVERYONE knows that to have a private chat in the NSA era, you go outdoors. Phones, the internet, email and your office can all be compromised with ease. But soon even that whispered conversation in the park may no longer be safe from prying ears. Carrying out covert audio surveillance along a city street or a wooded path, say, currently requires parabolic microphones, which look like large, clear salad bowls and need a direct, unobstructed view of the subject. Hardly 007 territory. Now, a Dutch acoustics firm, Microflown Technologies, has developed a matchstick-sized sensor that can pinpoint and record a target's conversations from a distance. Known as an acoustic vector sensor, Microflown's sensor measures the movement of air, disturbed by sound waves, to almost instantly locate where a sound originated. It can then identify the noise and, if required, transmit it live to waiting ears. Conventional microphones work when sound waves make a diaphragm move, creating an electrical signal. Microflown's sensor has no moving parts.

Switzerland to Launch 'Janitor' Satellite to Collect 370,000 Pieces of Space Junk From Earth's Orbit
Space junk is an ongoing problem for the world’s space administrations as decades worth of satellite launches and space missions have filled the Earth’s orbit with trash such as fuel tanks, lost tools and parts of derelict satellites. In order to combat this growing hazard and to avoid potentially devastating collisions, the Swiss Space Center at EPFL has launched CleanSpace One, a project to develop and build the first installment of satellites designed specifically to clean up space debris. Of the thousands of pieces of space junk in orbit, NASA is monitoring at least 16,000 of these objects that are larger than 10 cm in diameter. This is because if they collide with spacecraft or satellites at high speed, massive damage can occur. Not just that, but more junk is created. Enter CleanSpace One. “It has become essential to be aware of the existence of this debris and the risks that are run by its proliferation,” says Claude Nicollier, astronaut and EPFL professor. CleanSpace One is the Swiss Space Center’s first prototype in a family of “de-orbiting” satellites.

First Evidence of Comet Striking Earth Found in Egypt
A team of scientists claims to have found the first-ever definitive evidence of a comet striking Earth. After conducting a series of analyses, the researchers determined that a mysterious black pebble discovered years ago in the Egyptian desert is a piece of a comet nucleus — the first ever discovered. "It’s a typical scientific euphoria when you eliminate all other options and come to the realization of what it must be," study lead author Jan Kramers, of the University of Johannesburg in South Africa, said in a statement. [Best Close Encounters of the Comet Kind] The pebble, which the team has named "Hypatia" in honor of the ancient female mathematician, astronomer and philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria, is also studded with diamonds, which makes sense considering its cometary origin, researchers said. "Diamonds are produced from carbon-bearing material," Kramers said. "Normally they form deep in the Earth, where the pressure is high, but you can also generate very high pressure with shock. Part of the comet impacted, and the shock of the impact produced the diamonds."
