Editors Corner

Some of our readers caught the fact that we published a satirical story under "In The News" last week. For those that didn't, this week we have the title of that story under "Satire Watch" along with the originating websites disclaimer. We thank our readers for letting us know. Click here

We also have another story coming back from a previous newsletter. This one is about the Walipini Greenhouse. Some of our readers had trouble accessing the page we linked to last time, and those that could access it may not have been aware that there was a link to a document down the bottom of that article that showed how to construct this greenhouse. In this edition, we have a short video tour of one of these greenhouses and underneath that we have a link to that same document that shows how to construct it. Click here

While we're on the subject of constructing things, there is a "whiz kid" from Sierra Leone that has built a battery, as the article says, "out of acid, soda, and metal parts scavenged from trash bins that he now uses to light up area homes". He has also built himself a radio transmitter that he uses as a local radio station. Click here

Speaking of transmitting, some scientists seem to be warming up to the idea that animals, including humans, have a collective consciousness and can share behaviors and ideas with others without ever coming in to contact with them. Click here

There are more articles in this wonderful newsletter, but I'm feeling quite sleepy, I suspect from tryptophan related post turkey consumption. In closing, I would like to remind you to please support our advertisers so we can continue to bring you this wonderful newsletter.

Thank you, and have a wonderful week.

Whiz kid from Sierra Leone built own battery, radio transmitter
Kelvin Doe’s neighborhood in Sierra Leone has power lines, but they seldom deliver electricity. So, the 16-year-old whiz kid built his own battery out of acid, soda, and metal parts scavenged from trash bins that he now uses to light up area homes and help him work on his own inventions. Among other gadgets to his credit are a homemade radio transmitter, plus a generator to power it, that he uses to run his own community radio station under the handle DJ Focus.  “People normally call me DJ Focus in my community because I believe if you focus you can do invention perfectly,” he said in a video about the whiz kid produced by for the THNKR YouTube channel. Doe’s engineering prowess was noticed by David Monina Sengeh, a graduate student MIT Media Lab, during a summer innovation camp called Innovate Salone that he runs in Sierra Leone. Sengeh arranged for Doe to visit the top-flight engineering school this fall.

Science Watch

Are we all PSYCHIC? Scientists believe that animals - including humans - have a collective consciousness
Some may call it coincidence, while others call it a sixth sense but why do people think about someone right before they call, for example, or ‘have a feeling’ something is about to happen before it does? It may be due to something called collective consciousness - a term used by certain scientists to describe the practice of humans, and animals, sharing behaviours and ideas with each other telepathically. A report in 2010 claimed to have proved the presence of this consciousness and, by default, psychic abilities in humans. But these claims divided opinion and more recent reports dismiss them as nonsense. The idea of a collective consciousness was first presented by French sociologist Émile Durkheim in 1893. Durkheim’s definition related more to a shared understanding of certain morals and social norms based on people either imitating others, explicitly passing on these behaviours to one another, or agreeing certain ideals in order to feel accepted. Yet in the 1970s, scientists began to suggest this collective consciousness could be developed and spread through species non-explicitly; through telepathic or ‘supernatural’ means.
