Look For The Miracle

A year ago Avriel Hillman was diagnosed with a rare degenerative bone condition called Avascular Necrosis that afflicts many young people without warning.  She was told there were no options... but she found one. With your help she can get treatment that uses autologous stem cells from her own body to regenerate her hip bone.  This cutting edge and complex procedure has worked on others with advanced AVN, is a scientifically sound and well proven remedy, but is not covered by insurance or offered in this country.  Avriel has found a doctor in India with a high success rate in healing this condition.  Help Avi's story to become a similar success story.  The Arts Community of Yelm has come together to raise money fer her trip and treatment.  You can help by attending... Another Hilarious Hillman Production or... "Not Just Your Average Fundraiser".  There will be Refreshments, Strolling Players, Songs and Laughter, Goody Bags, Balloons and More.  There will also be a Silent Auction and a Live Auction.  This all starts at 5pm on March 28th.  Get your tickets at Gorden's Garden Center, Yelm Food Coop, Willow Spa or Don Juan's Mexican Kitchen.

Attitude of Gratitude
L & G Rap
Submitted by Cornelia O'Leary, Yelm WA

You recently posted in MC2020 ‘Remedy of the week’... ‘Attitude of Gratitude’, which prompts me to tell you that - I have a ‘poem’ to go with that!   Its’ called ‘Attitude’, subtitle L & G Rap (Love and Gratitude). The words came to me to the beat of a Rap ( yes, at my age, but I went with it!) in 2008, as I was doing my walk on the theme of  love and gratitude, so I wrote it down. It has recently been published in the Yelm Writer’s Circle book called ‘Mind Ripples’.  It’s a bit tongue in cheek  as a rap but does have a healing message.  So you are welcome to put in Master’s Connection for a bit of fun, as part of this week’s remedy/healing theme (rapping it for myself really got me jazzed), if you wish.

“Mind Ripples “ was published in September 2012 by the Yelm Writer’s Circle and is an anthology of writings from 15 of our budding authors. It is available on Amazon.com (ISBN 978-0-9853923-5-2). The first print has been sold and the second batch is in process.

Particle confirmed as Higgs boson
A newfound particle discovered at the world's largest atom smasher last year is indeed a Higgs boson, which is thought to play a role in how other subatomic particles get their mass, scientists reported Thursday at the annual Rencontres de Moriond conference in Italy. Physicists announced on July 4, 2012, that, with more than 99 percent certainty, they had found a new elementary particle weighing about 126 times the mass of the proton that could be the long-sought Higgs boson. The Higgs is sometimes referred to as the "God particle," to the chagrin of many scientists, who prefer its official name. But the two experiments, CMS and ATLAS, hadn't collected enough data to say the particle was, for sure, the Higgs boson, the last undiscovered piece of the puzzle predicted by the Standard Model, the reigning theory of particle physics.

Here's what happens to your body during a good giggle

Brain
As you hear a punch line, your brain ignites its centers for higher thought, muscle function, and emotion. Their conclusion: What a riot! The muscles around your eyes and cheeks start spontaneously contracting. Your noggin shoots a signal to your brain stem, the body's HQ for lung functions like breathing and laughter.

Lungs
Your diaphragm and chest muscles tighten, forcing air out of your lungs. That air rushes through your windpipe, blowing over your larynx. Your vocal cords vibrate and emit short, unfettered vowel sounds like ha-ha or ho-ho.

Eyes
If what has you going is really funny, your eyes start to water. Heart The sudden exit of air from your lungs creates an urgent call for oxygen. Your heart rate and blood pressure ramp up to help ferry more O2 to your organs.

World's first GM babies born
The world's first geneticallymodified humans have been created, it was revealed last night. The disclosure that 30 healthy babies were born after a series of experiments in the United States provoked another furious debate about ethics. So far, two of the babies have been tested and have been found to contain genes from three 'parents'. Fifteen of the children were born in the past three years as a result of one experimental programme at the Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science of St Barnabas in New Jersey. The babies were born to women who had problems conceiving. Extra genes from a female donor were inserted into their eggs before they were fertilised in an attempt to enable them to conceive. Genetic fingerprint tests on two one-year- old children confirm that they have inherited DNA from three adults --two women and one man.

Miracle grow: Indian farmers smash crop yield records without GMOs
What if the agricultural revolution has already happened and we didn’t realize it? Essentially, that’s the idea in this report from the Guardian about a group of poverty-stricken Indian rice and potato farmers who harvested confirmed world-record yields of rice and potatoes. Best of all: They did it completely sans-GMOs or even chemicals of any kind.

[Sumant] Kumar, a shy young farmer in Nalanda district of India’s poorest state Bihar, had — using only farmyard manure and without any herbicides — grown an astonishing 22.4 tonnes of rice on one hectare [~2.5 acres] of land. This was a world record and with rice the staple food of more than half the world’s population of seven billion, big news.

Whole Foods: Products Will Carry GMO Labeling
Whole Foods says all products in its North American stores that contain genetically modified ingredients will be labeled as such by 2018. The company says it's the first national grocery chain to set such a deadline for labeling foods that contain genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. A spokeswoman for the supermarket operator said organic foods will not have to carry the labels since they do not contain genetically modified ingredients by definition. Although Whole Foods is known as an organic grocer, it also sells a wide array of non-organic products. The use of GMOs has been a growing issue in recent years, with health advocates pushing for mandatory labeling even though the federal government and many scientists say the ingredients are safe.

Paper Artistry Workshop
Hello Master’s Connection readers,
First of all, I really want to say thank you to everybody who has supported the Japanese students.
Today, I would like to introduce a Japanese Paper Artistry by Yoshimi, the mother of Yuki. She has been in school (RSE) since 2005. She has been involved with various handicrafts such as knitting, sewing, calligraphy, making paper dolls since childhood. Her inspiration is derived from her love of nature, particularly flora in bloom. She liked drawing flowers with watercolor and pastel painting. Later, she focused her attention on Japanese paper and she thought that she could use it as her medium. In the joy of her creation, she discovered her original way to express the beauty of flowers. She works joyfully and it shows through her art.

Kakenya Ntaiya: A girl who demanded school

Kakenya Ntaiya made a deal with her father: She would undergo the traditional Maasai rite of passage of female circumcision if he would let her go to high school. Ntaiya tells the fearless story of continuing on to college, and of working with her village elders to build a school for girls in her community. It’s the educational journey of one that altered the destiny of 125 young women. (Filmed at TEDxMidAtlantic.)

Kakenya Ntaiya refused to accept the continued oppression of women in her Maasai village -- so she built a school that's shifting gender expectations in her community.

Tigris and Euphrates rivers losing water reserves at a rapid pace
A large portion of the Middle East lost freshwater reserves rapidly during the past decade. New data revealed already an arid region of Tigris-Euphrates Basin, which grows even drier due to human consumption of water for drinking and agriculture. The research team observed the Tigris and Euphrates river basins – including parts of Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran, and found that 144 cubic kilometers (117 million acre feet) of fresh water was lost from 2003 to 2009 – the roughly equivalent to the volume of the Dead Sea. About 60%  of the loss was attributed to the pumping of groundwater from underground reservoirs. When a drought shrinks the available surface water supply, irrigators and others turn to groundwater.

Amplified Greenhouse Effect Shifts North's Growing Seasons
Vegetation growth at Earth's northern latitudes increasingly resembles lusher latitudes to the south, according to a NASA-funded study based on a 30-year record of ground-based and satellite data sets. In a paper published Sunday, March 10, in the journal Nature Climate Change, an international team of university and NASA scientists examined the relationship between changes in surface temperature and vegetation growth from 45 degrees north latitude to the Arctic Ocean. Results show temperature and vegetation growth at northern latitudes now resemble those found 4 degrees to 6 degrees of latitude farther south as recently as 1982. "Higher northern latitudes are getting warmer, Arctic sea ice and the duration of snow cover are diminishing, the growing season is getting longer and plants are growing more," said Ranga Myneni of Boston University's Department of Earth and Environment. "In the north's Arctic and boreal areas, the characteristics of the seasons are changing, leading to great disruptions for plants and related ecosystems."

A New Fascinating View Of Antarctica's Complex Landscape
Scientists at the British Antarctic Survey recently published the most detailed map yet of Antarctica's landmass. Bedmap2 reveals a landscape of mountain ranges and plains cut by gorges and valleys much deeper than previously seen. In addition, the map - which is a product of collaboration between the BAS and international contributors - allows scientists to analyze, in much greater detail, the bed below the Antarctic ice sheet. Scientists used radio echo sounding measurements, seismic techniques, satellite readings and cartographic data to compile the map. Scientists found a new deepest point. The bed under the Byrd Glacier in Victoria Land is 2,870 meters below sea level- lower than any point on Earth's continental plates.

Warning: Major Supplements Openly Contain GMO Vitamin Sources
Genetically modified organisms have permeated much of the crop industry, absolutely infesting the processed food market, but are many ‘health’ supplements free from the presence of GMOs? As it turns out, major supplement producers actually will openly admit that they derive many of their formulas from GMO crops — consumers just aren’t really paying attention! If you know much about Monsanto or the prevalence of GMOs, you are likely aware that a large majority of corn (about 80-95% of the entire crop in the US, if not more, depending on what research you follow) is genetically modified. Being responsible for 90% of the US GM seed market, Monsanto has done its very best to create a genetically altered monopoly on the food supply. This is where the supplement factor comes in.

Brain Wrestling and More at UW
It’s not every day that you get to see, touch and pick up a human brain. Throw in brain-wrestling matches, interactive games and a few mind-bending optical illusions and you’ve got the University of Washington’s Brain Awareness Week, which Phoenix Rising middle school students attended on Tuesday. Their visit included a presentation from organizer Dr. Eric Chudler, an exhibit featuring different kinds of actual brains and a visit to the vast UW library, which several students compared to Harry Potter’s. “It was really fun and life-changing for me,” says Natasha. “This was the best field trip we’ve ever had.”

The trip kicked off with Chudler’s talk. “His presentation was very interactive with all kinds of slides and questions, so it was really fun to participate in that,” says C.R.E.A.T.E. specialist Sonya El Debssi. “He did quizzes on the brain in a really fun way to see what the audience already knew.” The students were impressed by different pieces of information. “The most interesting thing I learned is that sharks can sense electricity,” says Austin. “There were pictures of different brains and we had to decide if it was a human brain or a chimpanzee’s. I really liked the presentation,” says Andrew. Astroleah was struck by another fact. “He talked about how a man’s brain is actually heavier than a woman’s, but just because it’s heavier it doesn’t mean they’re smarter,” she says.
