Editors Corner

Have you ever thought about giving up on a dream? Or maybe you let a dream just slip to one side as you got older. Diana Nyad was 64 when she finally fulfilled her dream - swimming the one hundred and ten miles from Cuba to Florida! She first attempted this when she was 28 and basically stopped swimming after she was about 30. But when she turned 60, she decided that she wanted to pursue this "old" dream. I don't know if you saw her in one of our previous issues a while back, but in that one she said that she had tried and not succeeded. In this one, just a few years after she gave that speech, and on her fifth attempt, she succeeded! Her message? As the title says; Never, ever give up! Click here

The Passing of a Master
Darlene Marie Remillard - "Skydancer"
Written by Mark Stanley

Darlene Marie Remillard was born May 3, 1931 in Everett Wa. From her father she inherited a connection with nature and a love for plants. She grew up in south Seattle, where she went to high school and met my father, Alan Stanley. As a young women, she insisted on the "natural" path, like demanding natural child birth for her children in an era when it was considered passe in the hospitals. When I was a teenager, my friends all thought she was "cool"--an original hippie mom. She cooked well, sometimes brilliantly, but by the mid 1970's the inside of her refrigerator looked like an alien world, filled with colored jars of questionably edible things. Food became more of an ideological alchemical art project. My youngest brother--9 years behind me--survived by learning to feed himself (he was born on her birthday).

Something to Contemplate

10 Surprising Facts About How Our Brains Work
One of the things that surprises me time and time again is how we think our brains work and how they actually do. On many occasions I find myself convinced that there is a certain way to do things, only to find out that actually that’s the complete wrong way to think about it. For example, I always found it fairly understandable that we can multitask. Well, according to the latest research studies, it’s literally impossible for our brains to handle 2 tasks at the same time. Recently I came across more of these fascinating experiments and ideas that helped a ton to adjust my workflow towards how our brains actually work (instead of what I thought!). So here are 10 of the most surprising things our brain does and what we can learn from it:

1. Your brain does creative work better when you’re tired.
When I explored the science of our body clocks and how they affect our daily routines, I was interested to find that a lot of the way I’d planned my days wasn’t really the best way to go about it. The way we work, in particular, actually has a lot to do with the cycles of our body clocks.
