Kepler telescope studies star superflares
Nasa's Kepler space telescope has provided fresh insight on the colossal explosions that can afflict some stars. These enormous releases of magnetic energy - known as superflares - could damage the atmosphere of a nearby orbiting planet, putting at risk any lifeforms that might reside there. Fortunately, Kepler shows superflares to be much less frequent on slow-rotating stars like our Sun. The new observations are reported in the journal Nature. The biggest recorded flare on the Sun was probably the "Carrington event" of 1 September 1859. Described by the English astronomer Richard Carrington, this outburst sent a surge of electromagnetic radiation and charged particles towards the Earth. The magnetic fields embedded in the bubble of matter buffeted the Earth's own magnetic field, producing spectacular auroral lights. Electric fields generated in telegraph wires disrupted communications.

Annular Solar Eclipse Will Take Place On May 20, 2012
The "ring of fire" phenomenon will be visible for as much as 4 and a half minutes on Sunday, May 20th, 2012. It's an annular solar eclipse, in which the Moon will cover as much as 94% of the sun. Hundreds of millions of people will be able to witness the event. The Moon will pass in front of the sun, transforming sunbeams across the Pacific side of Earth into fat crescents and thin rings of light. The eclipse zone stretches from southeast Asia across the Pacific Ocean to western parts of North America. In the United States, the eclipse begins around 5:30 pm PDT. For the next two hours, a Moon-shaped portion of the sun will go into hiding. Greatest coverage occurs around 6:30 pm PDT.

Forty million Japanese in 'extreme danger' of life-threatening radiation poisoning, mass evacuations likely
Japanese officials are currently engaging in talks with Russian diplomats about where tens of millions of Japanese refugees might relocate in the very-likely event that the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear facility's Reactor 4 completely collapses. According to a recent report by EUTimes.net, Japanese authorities have indicated that as many as 40 million Japanese people are in "extreme danger" of radiation poisoning, and many eastern cities, including Tokyo, may have to be evacuated in the next few weeks or months to avoid extreme radiation poisoning.

The Statues of Easter Island have a body!
Now with working link :)
The Statues of Easter Island do have a body ( it's amazing that nobody thought before that the statues have a body ..)....
The discovery was published a few weeks ago on the Internet: the Statues of Easter Islands have a body! They were only known as big heads, now we know they hide many secrets, more than half have been underground now we see bodies and hands. It was discovered by the couple Routledge and another group that prefers to be anonymous. They found one statue with lots of writing.

DNA Goes Digital with New Biometric Tracking App
If you needed one more example of how DNA will soon cease to exist as a private piece of information, you need look no further than the latest product launch by Applied DNA Sciences. On May 10, the company announced that it is releasing a new QR (Quick Read) Code secured by nothing other than DNA. Without a doubt, this new product launch is yet another step toward the ultimate collection, databasing, and use of DNA by governments and corporations on a universal basis. One quick note for those who are unaware of what a QR code is. QR codes are inked, coded diagrams that are recognizable by electronic scanners, often serving the same purpose as a barcode. These codes can be found on a wide variety of product packaging including the shipping labels used by companies like UPS. In addition, QR Codes are sometimes used as a part of smartphone apps which require the user to scan a barcode.

In and Around Yelm
Get Connected for the Future

January, 2012.  A snow storm is forecast.  The snow started to fall, and fall and fall.  Shortly thereafter, power outages started to occur.  Well, just wait it out and we will all be fine.  Then the ice came on top of the snow.  We all listened as limbs and trees fell outside our hovels and, in some cases, through them.  More power outages.  Oh, this is different.  Then, the phone went out.  Lots of snow and ice, followed by limbs and trees across the roads.  Power out in Yelm, Rainier and Tenino.  Now we are in day three.  What is going on out there???

Some of us knew what was going on out there. The minute the storm started to move in, our Future Net group—the name of our group for those of us in the Yelm, Rainier, Tenino and surrounding areas—got on our ham radios. We checked in with each other to find out what conditions were like in each of our areas. Some of us also checked in with the Olympia Amateur Radio System (OARS) group and a south Pierce County group of radio buffs as well.  Why make a trip into Yelm for gasoline for your generator if the gas station has no power.

True Duck Story - A warm story
Something really cute happened in downtown San Antonio this week. Michael R. is an accounting clerk at Frost Bank and works there in a second story office.  Several weeks ago, he watched a mother duck choose the concrete awning outside his window as the unlikely place to build a nest above the sidewalk. The mallard laid ten eggs in a nest in the corner of the planter that is perched over 10 feet in the air. She dutifully kept the eggs warm for weeks, and Monday afternoon all of her ten ducklings hatched.

Occupy Your Creative Self-2012
There is a crashing, clanging, almost unnerving clatter of complaint and fury coming from the masses this year.  In unison, the voices of discontent are everywhere.
We have a natural pull to identify with all the protesters around the world at the moment, yet there is also a need to DO SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE with all the energy these "Occupy " movements are generating.

So, why not add another dimension to this wave of protest: creative engineering of endless possibilities.

Before It's News

Iceland’s Amazing Peaceful Revolution – Still Not in the News
No news from Iceland? Why? Last we heard, people were rising up and overthrowing the bankers. Then, no news on the television or newspapers for two years. What happened? Why won’t the papers and TV tell us how the bankers successfully crushed or minimized another rebellion? Because… THEY DIDN’T! This time, the people won. The people of Iceland have overwhelmingly risen up and forced their government puppets of the banks to resign. Primary banks have been nationalized. The debt scam imposed by Great Britain and Holland money printers was declared null and void. A public assembly has been created to rewrite Iceland’s constitution.

Computer Reads Your Thoughts, Does Your Multi-tasking Dirty Work
Researchers from MIT, Indiana University and Tufts University have developed “Brainput,” a system which detects when your brain is trying to multitask, then offloads some of that work to a computer. Erin Treacy Solovey led the new research in hopes of increasing productivity and focus by letting computers do some of our grunt work. The novel idea of having computers do our dirty work isn’t a new one. After all, we did invent the calculator and computer, and without these there would be no internet and no world of knowledge one Google search away. Brainput will work in a different way, however.

Passing of a Master
Tari Parker

Tari Parker, 30 year student of Ram's, passed May 13 at dawn @ 4:45am.
Tari passed on Mother’s Day with her children at her side. It is really heartwarming to have all of the acknowledgements coming in from my RSE family, Tari will be greatly missed. I will be having some kind of a celebration for her this summer but am not sure as to the date right now. Most likely sometime late June or early July. I live in California and have to coordinate with family members from Ohio as well. I will keep you posted. - Becki (Tari's daughter)

Estate Sale - Tari Parker

We (Tari's family) are having an estate sale at Tari's this weekend. I know that this is short notice but I have been in chaos all week trying to tie up her affairs and pack her house.
My sister, brother and I have worked non stop since her passing and are all heading to our respective homes today. Teresa and Chery Powers are holding the sale on our behalf. There are many things that the students may be interested in including books, tapes, storage containers, tools, furniture and appliances, yard equipment and tons more.
The sale will be on Saturday from 8-4 and Sunday from 8-11. Her address is 643 Leonard Rd. Onalaska.

I know there is an event this weekend but I would imagine that there are some people who may not be going.

Remedy of the Week
Seasonal Allergies—Lemon, Lavender and Peppermint

Now that the Scotch Broom is in full bloom, I have had several requests for a reminder of how to treat seasonal allergies. You can easily save time and money using essential oils to relieve your allergy symptoms instead of over the counter antihistamines that make you too drowsy to work or even drive.

The simple recipe is 2 drops each of Lemon, Lavender and Peppermint in a capsule. Take 2-3 times per day for the first few days until it gets into your system and then just twice per day is all that is usually needed.

There are no nasty side-affects-- just pleasant scents and sweet breath.

For more information about essential oils, contact Anita Marriott at 360-894-6754 or online at www.doterramasters.com

“I am 1,000 percent behind this school.” - Ramtha

Kindergarten Delivers Environmental Ethics Lesson

The middle school students got, well, schooled this week – by a group of kindergarteners, no less. After reading “Our Class is Going Green”, a book written by another group of kindergarteners, Audrey’s class was on a mission to clean up campus and spread the word. “When they were done with the book, they wanted to go outside and pick up garbage,” says Audrey. “One of them said, ‘We should go tell the big kids to pick up their trash.’ So we used recycled materials to make posters on ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ and plastered them everywhere.”

Next was a visit to the middle school, where the students presented their posters, plus a few words of advice. “You can’t just throw trash on the floor,” said Deka. “Just now when we were coming in we saw a bunch of garbage out there, and we picked it up.”

“Don’t just color a tiny little box or a little something and say you’re done,” Jacob told them. “That’s just wasting paper.”

“If there’ s not enough room to do any more coloring, there’s this thing that’s called ‘reduce.’ You turn the paper around and use the other side,” said Deka.

Reducing water consumption was also a hot topic. “When you put water on your toothbrush, you have to turn the water off and then you brush your teeth, not just leave it on,” Tyler informed the class.

“They’re really into it,” says Audrey. “They take it very seriously.” The class’s next step is to create their own book about the three R’s. Meanwhile, Alexa had the last word.

“If there’s trash outside, pick it up.”
