Editors Corner

Whatever happened to the lazy days of summer?  Right now I am dreaming of a day with nothing to do except eat those gorgeous ripe raspberries in my garden.  From the looks of the community calendar everyone else is keeping busy, too. Click here  This weekend is a fun festival in Tenino—The Oregon Trail Days.  Check it out, it looks like fun.  Then, on Sunday, be sure to stop by the Yelm Farmer’s Market. It is the best kept secret of the summer. Great homegrown veggies, fruits, baked goods along with hand crafted items.  Please support this local effort. It is such a treat to have fresh, locally grown food so readily available.  Check it out and support it, I know you will love it.   I do.

Meanwhile, beyond the bounds of Yelm, the summer drought is spreading and the heat wave continues in the US.  Greenland’s ice is rapidly melting. Read about it here. I know you are busy this week, but you just have to take 20 minutes to read a very special little book online. It is called “The Enlightenment”.  We have uploaded the entire book. It is short and very special.
It reminds me of the Henry Sugar story. Suspend your judgment and make room for an interesting tale filled with wisdom.  It is a very enjoyable, enlightening read. Click here

A Personal Letter from Bettye Johnson

It was July when the first RSE Beginners event took place here in Yelm in 1988 and I attended. The following year – 1989 – there was the retreat in Estes Park, Colorado, which I attended followed by another retreat on the Yelm campus in May of that year. At that time the City of Seattle was planning to dump their sludge along our Nisqually River. One of the students was spearheading a protest. During the retreat, Ramtha asked us to go to Seattle in mass and there were those who wanted to speak to the City Council. In these early days, we did not sleep on campus and we were asked to go home and get all ‘dolled’ up and attend this Council meeting. I do not recall the number of students who were there as some chartered a bus and the rest of us carpooled. We were also picketing on the street of the Council building. Trucks and cars tooted their horns as we walked. I managed to find my way into the Council Room. As I remember, it seemed the members were at tables that formed a circle and some of our students stood behind them.

65 Random Acts of Kindness

Man Celebrates 65th Birthday by Giving Away Free Money
Doug Eaton wanted to celebrate his birthday on June 11 in a big way, so he turned to his friends for ideas -- ended up marking the day withrandom acts of kindness, including handing out free money to people passing by. "I asked a bunch of my friends on Facebook what should I do on my 65th and I got a whole long list of stuff," he told KFOR-TV. "And one of my friends said, 'Why don't you do 65 random acts of kindness?'" So that's exactly what he did, spending 65 minutes standing on the corner of NW 39th Street and May Avenue in Oklahoma City, handing out $5 bills to people who passed by. He told his Facebook friends that he handed out more than $375, but the response -- and the amount of good cheer he shared -- was priceless.

Are Zombie Bees Infiltrating Your Neighborhood?
Zombie bees are not science fiction. They are real—and real threat to already-threatened U.S. honeybee populations. Honeybees (Apis mellifera) in California and South Dakota have been observed acting zombielike, wandering away from their hives at night and crawling around blindly in circles. These insects have been rendered insensate by a parasitizing fly that lays eggs in the bees’ bodies. After the bee dies a lonesome death, pupae crawl out and grow to adult flies that seek new bodies to infect.

Escalating Problem: Satellites See Collapse of the Greenland Glaciers!
Our reality is overshadowed by bad news. The Greenland, Alaskan and West Antarctic ice sheets together hold about 25% of the fresh water on our planet. The effects of the collapse of either ice sheet would be huge. Once you lost one of these ice sheets, there's no putting it back for thousands of years, if ever. If they disintegrate, sea level could rise nearly 20 meters, possibly in only one decade. This would swamp most cities and ports, as well a much of the best agricultural land. We now know that not only are the edges melting fast, but the surface melt is seeping through the ice to lubricate the junction between the glacier and the rock underneath. This is the unexpected factor that has turned scientific attention onto this escalating problem.

Skygazers around planet Earth enjoyed the close encounter of planets and Moon in July 15's predawn skies. And while many saw bright Jupiter next to the slender, waning crescent, Europeans also had the opportunity to watch the ruling gas giant pass behind the lunar disk, occulted by the Moon as it slid through the night. Clouds threaten in this telescopic view from Montecassiano, Italy, but the frame still captures Jupiter after it emerged from the occultation along with all four of its largeGalilean moons. The sunlit crescent is overexposed with the Moon's night side faintly illuminated by Earthshine. Lined up left to right beyond the dark lunar limb are Callisto, Ganymede, Jupiter, Io, and Europa. In fact, Callisto, Ganymede, and Io are larger than Earth's Moon, while Europa is only slightly smaller.

Dark Money Political Groups Target Voters Based on Their Internet Habits
Lauren Berns was browsing Talking Points Memo when he saw an ad with President Obama’s face. “Stop the Reckless Spending,” the ad read, and in smaller print, Paid for by Crossroads GPS.    Berns was surprised. Why was Crossroads GPS, a group that powerful Republican strategist Karl Rove helped found, advertising on a liberal-leaning political website? Looking closely at the ad, Berns saw a small blue triangle in the upper-left hand corner. He knew what that meant: this ad wasn’t being shown to every person who read that page. It was being targeted to him in particular. Tax-exempt groups like Crossroads GPS have become among the biggest players in this year’s election.  They’re often called “dark money” groups, because they can raise accept unlimited amounts of money and never have to disclose their donors.

Yelm News

Free clinic gets a name
A free, Yelm-area medical clinic expected to open within the year now has a name. Tahoma Vista Free Clinic will serve low-income people in Yelm and the surrounding communities. “We think (the name) localizes us geographically, since all the communities we will serve look at the Tahoma Glacier on (Mount Rainier),” Dr. Bill Elledge said in an email. The clinic should open within the year, hopefully sooner, “but it’s just not possible to say at this point,” said Elledge. The clinic now has the results of a needs survey that will give the clinic a better idea of how it can best serve the community — how many days or nights it will be available per month, and what services it will initially offer, for example.

Yelm Cinemas - A request from JZ Knight

Yelm Cinemas’ new manager approached RSE to explore new, mutually beneficial opportunities. To that end, the first film requested by JZ Knight since Dominic Rivas became manager will be shown in the evening over a six day period, rather than just a single showing at 9am on a Saturday morning.

RSE appreciates the efforts of Yelm Cinemas to carry Last Call at the Oasis to be shown daily August 3-9, an important film demonstrating what Ramtha has stated many times: “water will become more valuable than gold

Phoenix Rising School

“I am 1,000 percent behind this school.” - Ramtha

PRS + Community = Success

The Phoenix Rising School: it’s not just for kids. Lately this seems like a fitting motto for a place that is rapidly becoming a hub for community learning at any age. In June, Lois Wilman hosted two weekend classes on campus for people interested in getting their ham radio license; last Friday, a mini-sustainability summit featured a solar water heater workshop presented by inventor Ray Lam, owner and founder of Silk Road Solar, and a demonstration of bicycle generators by Paulette Alaena. On Sunday, the Rainier Time Bank will throw a community barbecue and Chinese auction at the school as an introduction to time banking, followed by an encore performance of the water heater workshop.

“The core of our school philosophy is igniting the joy of life-long learning,” says PRS Executive Director Aaron Rodriguez, “and as a community organization that means partnering with individuals and organizations that are educating our community members of all ages.”

The inspiration to host an event at the school began with Lois and spread from there. Although there is no facilities charge for the venue, thus far organizations have donated part of their proceeds to PRS or otherwise arranged for the school to benefit in some fashion. “I was looking for something in the Yelm area where we could have more of a private setting,” she explains. “There are very few facilities available and everything is so expensive. It worked so well with PRS because we just gave a donation. The donation we gave ended up being more than we would have paid but it was worth it because of supporting the community.”

Nature’s Classroom: PRS Expands Outdoor Education Program
It’s not every day that you see a four year old confidently wielding a saw, but that sight is coming very soon to a school near you – Phoenix Rising, to be precise. Nick Gillon is joining the PRS staff this year in order to help implement a comprehensive outdoor education program, and he has a track record of training students of all ages to build their own outdoor play areas. Nick brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to PRS; aside from earning a Masters Degree in education, a teaching certification and Waldorf teaching credentials from Antioch University, he has also lived on a working farm, worked as a builder and founded a small early childhood learning center focused on nature immersion. Later, he developed the outdoor program for the Olympia Waldorf School and is currently doing Ph.D. studies at the University of Washington’s College of Education. Here he talks about his plans for the coming year and the importance of challenge in stretching students’ ideas of what they can do.
