We finally picked those raspberries I told you about last week and today I made the best raspberry tart ever!  Here is the recipe. Click here  I hope you like it, too.

The biggest news of the week, from my point of view, was the two massive power outages in India.  The heat was at extreme levels and over 670 million people were without power.  Some say it was solar activity that caused it; some say just a weak, overloaded grid.  I say let’s all take this as a wake-up call. Click here   Solar cells printed on glass are an exciting step in efforts toward energy independence. Click here

JZ Knight’s 2008 byline more relevant today
“What If 2012 is a lot of hype?”
“What if it is not?”

In my humble opinion, I believe that 2012 has become a date of troubling uncertainty worldwide for the majority of people.
The infamous 2012 date owes its woeful celebrity, for the most part, to religious traditions which contain an apocalyptic end for civilization. References to a fiery, bloodletting war culminating in a catastrophic and nightmarish end for humanity are contained within the doctrines of Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, the spiritual New Age, and others. Further, the underpinnings of 2012 go far beyond the religious communities, winding their way into numerous sects, as the underlying tones of these prophecies have been “seen” by prophets, visionaries, psychics, mediums, and shamans of all persuasions."

This Is What 670 Million People Without Power Look Like: Pictures From A Blacked Out India
First thing today we reported that India just suffered what may have been the biggest blackout in history, after half of the country's population of 1.2 billion, or just under 700 million was without power, as the electric grid of more than a dozen states suffered an epic collapse. Below we shares some pictures courtesy of Times of India giving some sense of what it means for two Americas worth of people to live without electricity indefinitely. Of note: the calm, peace and order despite the epic traffic jams and crowds. One wonders what would happen in the US if the entire country was without electrcity for even just one hour. Finally, one wonders what the impact to the Indian, Asian, and Global economy will be as a result of the complete halt that at least half of India - one of the world's core marginal economies - has ground to do.

NextGen - How Future More "Exotic-Looking" Aircraft Will Change The Way We Travel
In what way will NextGen affect the average person? What will these new vehicles look like? When can we expect to fly these new aircraft? These are some of the questions many are already asking. During peak travel there can be more than 5,000 aircraft above America at once. Managing air traffic is undoubtedly an extremely complex process, which is the reason why the United States is currently undertaking the largest transformation of air traffic control ever attempted.

'Printed' solar cells could coat glass
SOON, the windows of your house and the screen of your smartphone may be collecting power.
An article published in the journal Advanced Materials says researchers at the University of California have built working examples of a new kind of solar cell: It allows roughly 60 per cent of natural light through, but uses the rest to generate electricity. This is not the first attempt to turn glass features such as windows into solar panels. But the approach used by Yany Yang Laboratory has the potential for mass-manufacturing techniques as it can be "printed" on polymer rolls before being applied to glass.

Strange Red Appearance Of Azov Sea - Locals Panic
You might remember the article about the red rocks that puzzled scientists for a long time. This week, scientists and citizens were stunned to see how the Azov Sea suddenly turned red. "It might be a sign of the coming events, or even end of the world" say the locals. The officials have been trying to calm down people, explaining that although this does not happen often it is a natural phenomenon that does sometimes occur.

Hidden Rift Valley As Big As Grand Canyon Discovered Beneath West Antarctica
A new discovery suggests that a rift in the Antarctic rock as deep as the Grand Canyon is increasing ice melt from the continent. Experts from the University of Aberdeen and British Antarctic Survey (BAS) made the discovery below Ferrigno Ice Stream, a region visited only once previously, over fifty years ago, in 1961, and one that is remote even by Antarctic standards. Their findings, reported in Nature this week reveal that the ice-filled ancient rift basin is connected to the warming ocean which impacts upon contemporary ice flow and loss.

Palm trees 'grew on Antarctica'
Scientists drilling deep into the edge of modern Antarctica have pulled up proof that palm trees once grew there.
Analyses of pollen and spores and the remains of tiny creatures have given a climatic picture of the early Eocene period, about 53 million years ago. The study in Nature suggests Antarctic winter temperatures exceeded 10C, while summers may have reached 25C. Better knowledge of past "greenhouse" conditions will enhance guesses about the effects of increasing CO2 today. The early Eocene - often referred to as the Eocene greenhouse - has been a subject of increasing interest in recent years as a "warm analogue" of the current Earth.

Scientists Prove DNA Can Be Reprogrammed by Words and Frequencies
THE HUMAN DNA IS A BIOLOGICAL INTERNET and superior in many aspects to the artificial one. Russian scientific research directly or indirectly explains phenomena such as clairvoyance, intuition, spontaneous and remote acts of healing, self healing, affirmation techniques, unusual light/auras around people (namely spiritual masters), mind’s influence on weather patterns and much more. In addition, there is evidence for a whole new type of medicine in which DNA can be influenced and reprogrammed by words and frequencies WITHOUT cutting out and replacing single genes.

Fruit flies offer DNA clue to why women live longer
Scientists believe they have discovered a clue to why women tend to live longer than men - by studying fruit flies.
Writing in Current Biology, they focus on mutations in mitochondrial DNA - the power source of cells. Mitochondria are inherited only from mothers, never from fathers, so there is no way to weed out mutations that damage a male's prospects. But one ageing expert said there were many factors that explained the gender difference in life expectancy. By the age of 85, there are approximately six women for every four men in the UK, and by 100 the ratio is more than two to one. And females outlive males in many other species.

Shaking a UG from the Grid
Submitted by Cindy Anderson, Yelm

Like many other RSE students, we left families and careers behind 15 years ago to come study with our teacher. After buying a home and beginning to settle in, we ran headlong into the teachings of The Days To Come, which left us with many questions—What exactly is a UG and where would you put one? The walls are supposed to be how thick? Food for how long? This seemed a tall order when there was barely enough money to pay bills and go to events. Our only recourse would have to be the disciplines. FOCUS! During all these years The Days To Come had morphed into The Days That Are Here and we didn’t seem any closer to our dream. We decided to stop waiting for something to happen and start walking through any door that was open…even a crack. Shake that grid!!

Fish With Skin Cancer? Melanoma-Like Lesions Seen In Australian Trout For First Time
The first case of skin cancer in a wild marine fish population looks eerily similar to the melanoma that plagues humans, researchers report today (Aug. 1). Coral trout living on Australia's Great Barrier Reef are directly beneath the Antarctic ozone hole, the world's largest, which is the result of the depletion of ozone in the atmosphere that normally protects humans from harmful UV rays. "Further work needs to be carried out to establish the exact cause of the cancer, but having eliminated other likely factors such as microbial pathogens and marine pollution, UV radiation appears to be the likely cause," study researcher Michael Sweet, of Newcastle University in the United Kingdom, said in a statement.

Howard Zinn (August 24, 1922 – January 27, 2010) was an American academic historian, author, playwright, and social activist. Before and during his tenure as a political science professor at Boston University from 1964-88 he wrote more than 20 books, which included his best-selling and influential A People's History of the United States. He wrote extensively about the civil rights and anti-war movements, as well as of the labor history of the United States. His memoir, You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train, was also the title of a 2004 documentary about Zinn's life and work.

Recipe of the Week

Brown Butter Raspberry Tart
I have made this tart many times and it's always a hit! Great when raspberries go on sale! It's very easy and makes a great dessert to take to a party. I have also used the crust recipe as a base for a chocolate crust for a different tart by adding 3 TBSP of cocoa and about half an ounce more butter. That actually will fit a 10 inch tart pan. Great recipe.

"Hemp for Victory" and "the Hemp Revolution" This is not a film on marijuana. Hemp is distant cousin to marijuana as mangos are to poison oak. The ridiculous law outlawing it's use is still on the books but the crop is one of the most useful and profitable things to be grown by farmers. So why is the crop still outlawed? Come see the benefits of this crop and the truth behind the smear campaign in these short films. Free to the community of Yelm if they bring a pack of matches. Otherwise it is a donation of $2.00.

Japanese equestrian defies Father Time as the oldest competitor at London Olympics
The oldest competitor at the 2012 Olympic Games has revealed the extraordinary sacrifices he has made in order to remain a medal contender well past retirement age. Hiroshi Hoketsu, who will represent Japan in the equestrian discipline of dressage at the age of 71, told Yahoo! Sports how chasing a slice of history and becoming the oldest Olympian in the last 92 years is the result of a fanatical commitment to the sport. "I have not seen my wife, Motoko, for more than a year," said Hoketsu, who lives and trains in the German town of Aachen in order to team up with his horse, Whisper, and his Dutch coach. "It is difficult to be away from home for this long as an old man and I owe everything to her patience and understanding."

Lucid Dreaming

Inside The Mind Of Lucid Dreamers: People Who Can Control Their Dreams And Perform Actions
Have you ever experienced that you know you are dreaming although you sleep? This is a hybrid state between sleeping and being awake. It is called lucid dreaming and it can be a somewhat awkward experience. During lucid dreaming you can take sometimes control of your dreams and perform various actions. Scientists have long wondered what is happening inside the brain of a lucid dreamer. What role does consciousness play? What was know from a scientific point of view, was the fact that lucid dreamers are people who can become aware of dreaming during sleep, but the process that caused this state was unknown.

Michael the Knight - The Final Battle
Submitted by Klaus Rahikainen, Finland

Here's a story of mine that your readers might enjoy, a story of conquering our human Back Story of fear. A universal HisStory. - Klaus Ra

Once upon a time there was a boy called Little Michael. He lived a long, long time ago right now in a faraway land just here. He was a son of a great knight who fought the dragons of the world all through his life. Dragon slaying was all that Michael’s father ever thought of – he killed many of those ferocious beasts – and appropriately enough he was eventually killed in the claws of a mighty dragon. On that fateful day Father met a dragon who was too big and too powerful for him, a real Pendragon. After a long and bloody battle Father was torn into pieces, shredded and eaten up. Only battered pieces of his once shining armor together with his beautiful sword were left behind.

On The Lighter Side

A Love Story
In 2003, police in Warwickshire , England, opened a garden shed and found a whimpering, cowering dog. The dog had been locked in the shed and abandoned. It was dirty and malnourished, and had quite clearly been abused. In an act of kindness, the police took the dog, which was a female greyhound, to the Nuneaton Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, which is run by a man named Geoff Grewcock, and known as a haven for animals abandoned, orphaned, or otherwise in need. Geoff and the other sanctuary staff went to work with two aims: to restore the dog to full health, and to win her trust. It took several weeks, but eventually both goals were achieved. They named her Jasmine, and they started to think about finding her an adoptive home.

Remedy of the Week
Essential Tips for Camping

  1. Lemon Oil. Purify any questionable drinking water with a couple of drops of lemon oil. Also, after you catch the fish, add some lemon oil to it while grilling, YUM.

  2. Lavender Oil. Chances are someone in the group will sunburned. Lavender soothes sun stressed skins. Great for itching bun bites, too.

  3. Terra Shield Blend. The outdoors is filled with biting insects. Keep them away with Terra Shield. It really works and smells good, too.

Nature’s Classroom: PRS Expands Outdoor Education Program
It’s not every day that you see a four year old confidently wielding a saw, but that sight is coming very soon to a school near you – Phoenix Rising, to be precise. Nick Gillon is joining the PRS staff this year in order to help implement a comprehensive outdoor education program, and he has a track record of training students of all ages to build their own outdoor play areas. Nick brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to PRS; aside from earning a Masters Degree in education, a teaching certification and Waldorf teaching credentials from Antioch University, he has also lived on a working farm, worked as a builder and founded a small early childhood learning center focused on nature immersion. Later, he developed the outdoor program for the Olympia Waldorf School and is currently doing Ph.D. studies at the University of Washington’s College of Education. Here he talks about his plans for the coming year and the importance of challenge in stretching students’ ideas of what they can do.
