Editors Corner

Hi, everyone, here’s hoping that this newsletter finds you happy and healthy.  As the newsletter came together this week, a happy and healthy theme emerged.   In Health Watch there are some great pictures of chromosomes and brightly colored telomeres.  Be sure to read about how the new clinical test calibrates your life expectancy on the length of your telomeres.  Keep a light heart as you read because you know what to do to lengthen your telomeres.  I guess the inventor of this test didn’t get the memo on how to repair his telomeres. Click here

As always, our friend Teri Simpson, has put a light-hearted twist on an extremely important subject.  I love how Teri can take the seemingly overwhelming subject of preparedness, and reduce it to a simple checklist.  Teri is the voice of experience.  Listen to her and check off every item on her list. Click here

Brian Greene is as animated as ever in this great video entitled “Is our Universe the Only Universe?”  Dr. Greene has a gift for being able to make quantum physics sound simple and relevant to every man. Click here

Scroll down to check on Phoenix Rising School this week. Have you ever seen a butterfly crawl out of the cocoon?  PRS captured that amazing moment on video.  Click here   I wish I had learned math like the students at PRS.  Learning fractions would have been twice as much fun with ½ the effort. Click here

Weather Watch: Did you know that it was 111°F in Texas last week?  I wonder what they think of global warming now?  Extreme temperatures in April set and broke all kinds of records.  Hmm, remember last week we showed you four feet of hail on the ground in Texas?  It makes me wonder what is going on down there. Click here

In local weather news, we have a special contribution from one of our readers, Chantal LaFont.  She has created her own “Little Almanac” from her back yard observations.  Her findings are quite empowering. Click here

Speaking of observing nature, you have got to see this series of photos that chronicle two tiny birds building a mud nest.  Who taught this tiny creature to engineer his beautiful home?  Click here

Did you hear in the news about the remnants of the Japanese tsunami washing ashore on the west coast of North America?  Here is a touching story about a young Japanese boy’s soccer ball that was found in Alaska and returned to him.  Click here

By the way, in case you haven’t noticed, Ben is updating www.MastersConnection2020.com daily with articles about the latest in science and nature. He has such a great mind, and is constantly researching.  It is worth a daily click to see what is on his mind today. Click here

Also, don’t forget that our personal classified advertising is now free to everyone—all over the world. Remember we have readership in every nook and cranny of this wide world.  Use this resource to spread the word, find a friend, or just connect. Click here

Reality Checklist
By Teri Simpson of Optimum Preparedness

I was talking to some friends the other day and they were throwing out things they still wanted to get before December (as part of their "supplies"). As I listened, there was some small thing that didn't sit quite right with what I was hearing but I could not put my finger on it.

It was a couple of days later that it struck me why I just wasn't quite comfortable with the list of stuff. Sometimes we can get so caught up in doing things that need to be done that we can lose sight of the bigger picture.

I came back to the basic question: Why would someone spend so much money, time and effort to build an underground, a shelter? What is the bottom line reason?

The answer has to be that they are doing it to preserve their life should there be a catastrophic event.

OK, in that case, since it is a structure that has finite space in it, and you can only put so much stuff in there (the actual amount, of course, will vary from structure to structure) then it stands to reason that you should put really important stuff in first and leave things like chips and candy until after the basic essentials are in.

So what are the basic essentials?

Food (the staples to keep the body alive and healthy, even though it might not be what you are used to eating). Here is a list of amounts for 1 person or 2 people for 1 year. Substitutions are fine as long as they stay in the same category (ie you can sub ramen noodles or orzo for whole wheat elbow macaroni).

Water and the ability to provide safe drinkable water (a good water filter)

New Controversial Blood Test Determining How Long You Will Live Is Entering The Market
A new, highly controversial blood test is soon going to be released and it is already being criticized and labeled unethical. The blood test, which is going to start selling in United Kingdom will predict how long a person will live. The test measures the length of the protecting telomeres, those structures found on the tips of chromosomes. The length of telomeres apparently correlates with how fast a person is aging biologically, and hence researchers want to offer individuals some insight into just how much longer their bodies can hold up.

World's 'most threatened' tribe finds itself in dire straits
Campaign hopes to save Brazil's Awa people from outsiders gobbling up land
A new international campaign hopes to save a group of people who have been dubbed "the most threatened tribe in the world" — the Awa tribe of Brazil — from encroaching outsiders who are gobbling up their land. The Awa live in the Brazilian state of Maranhao on lands set aside for their hunter-gatherer lifestyle. But according to the tribal advocacy group Survival International, which is leading the new campaign, the tribe is increasingly under threat by illegal settlement and logging on their lands. One reserve set aside for the tribe, the Awa Territory, is one-third deforested, its trees stripped by illegal logging operations, some with sawmills operating only miles from Awa land.

Sea Salp Ocean Organisms Shut Down Nuclear Power Plant
Thumb-sized ocean organisms called "sea salp" have scored a victory over human engineering, as a multitude of the creatures forced a nuclear plant to shut down on Friday. The Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant, in San Luis, California, shut down its Unit 2 reactor after sea salp, a planktonic jellyfish-like creature clogged the screens of the plant’s coolant water intake. The influx of the gelatinous animals was discovered Wednesday. Initially, plant operators reduced its functional reactor to 25% capacity. Unit 1 had a scheduled refueling earlier in the week, and had been shut down.

Amazing Underground Dwellings!
Get closer to nature by living in an underground home built from sustainable materials

I’ve always wanted to live in an underground dwelling because it’s the closest I’ll ever get to living like a Hobbit, and it seems like the perfect place to go in case zombies attack. Most importantly, underground homes are very eco-friendly and are built directly into the earth, which means they take up less construction material and produce less waste. Plus, they just look cool!

Announcement

The Triad Theatre
It was late at night, and the conversation went something like this:

SHE: Before you go to bed, is there anything that you can think of that might be a good business to go into that building on the corner of Yelm and 1st street?

ME: Well, I don’t know what the interior is like, but I know it was once a theatre. I know we need a place to see independent films so we don’t have to go at 9AM on a Saturday. And we don’t really have any place that we can have lectures or meetings. Would it work for that?

And thus began my sister, Jayne’s journey into creating the Yelm Independent Film and Arts Foundation. She contacted the owner of the building, Steve Craig, on a whim one fall day, and was taken by the space. She had a great rapport with Mr. Craig, and they both wanted the place to be something more community oriented. They brainstormed together for months, and Jayne began the paperwork for non-profit status. In February, she posted an inquiry on Bettye Johnson’s website and received replies from many people who would be interested in short and long term use of the space.

My Little Almanac
By MC2020 reader Chantal Lafont
A few days ago, on one of the rare sunny and warm days we have recently had, this new friend of mine I was visiting happened to mention that she felt a little nervous because she had not started her garden yet. My reply was: no need to worry! If things go like last year, winter is not over. And I added: I just do not like living by assumptions and I have been keeping track of the main seasonal events starting in 2010 so that whatever people say about the weather, like: Oh it is so cold and wet this year! last year, bla bla bla… I can go to my little records and know for myself for sure. She thought my idea was great and insisted that I should share it.

Coincidences: What are the chances of them happening?
Our resident statistician explores the odds that can help explain seemingly bizarre chance events … and teaches you a few party tricks.
It is a small world, isn’t it? You are on holiday in the Pyrenees. You write a postcard to a friend at home and set off to post it. Then who should you meet but that same friend coming up the street. This not only saves you the cost of a stamp but it also provides a great holiday story – enough to make you think that something spooky is going on.
Similar coincidences happen all the time to someone, somewhere, making the plot-driving inventions of Charles Dickens seem almost plausible. Normally we statisticians deal with the dark underbelly of risk – accidents, deaths, disasters, general gloom and doom – but coincidences show the bright, fun side of the way chance plays out in our lives.

Seti Live website to crowdsource alien life
A website has been launched that aims to get the public involved in the search for extraterrestrial life. Announced at the TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) conference in Los Angeles, the site will stream radio frequencies that are transmitted from the Seti (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Allen Telescope Array. Participants will be asked to search for signs of unusual activity. It is hoped the human brain can find things the automated system might miss. The website is the latest stage in a quest "to empower Earthlings everywhere to become active participants in the ultimate search for cosmic company".

UFO Near The Sun: Curious NASA Photo Stirs Debate
Anything getting close to the sun -- with temperatures estimated at 9,900 Fahrenheit -- would surely burn up. However, if that object were an alien spacecraft it could be equipped with a technology that could withstand that enormous heat. Of course, that's a very big "if." On April 24, a camera on NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory seems to have captured the image of something very large and artificially constructed hovering perilously close to our solar neighbor. The NASA video shows something that looks like a huge, sectioned object with some sort of lengthy attached mechanical arm. As the video spreads around the Internet, UFO believers are claiming the object is an alien spaceship.

Watch NASA video of the object in question:

On The Lighter Side

Whether you’re a ‘bird person’ or not, this is stunning!!!
Not to detract from the sheer magic of it, but in practical terms, how MANY trips would a bird have to make with that tiny little quantity of mud/clay it could carry? (and how far from the nest is the source?)

Math Lesson Cleverly Disguised as Art
Trajan’s first attempt to copy a drawing of the mythological character Jason (think Argonauts, not Friday the 13th) was a classic exercise in trial and error.  Despite instructions from math teacher Diane D’Acuti to make a grid and recreate each box within it proportionally, he started free sketching and soon, a misshapen and disproportionate creature had emerged.  “It turned out really bad,” he says. “She made me restart the whole thing and she told me to sketch lighter and move from square to square.”

The exercise was part of a middle school math lesson that used proportional drawing to teach about fractions, measurements and proportions. Students chose pictures to copy, and “Trajan had a very difficult picture,” says Diane. “They had to make a grid and either multiply it to increase it in proportion or divide it to decrease it, and then redraw the picture. Trajan wasn’t following the gridwork, so I had him redo it.”

Butterflies Emerge!
“Hey! Where did everybody go?” That would have been a reasonable question last Saturday when nearly the entire PRS staff disappeared at one point during the Open House. So what happened? As it turns out, a big event was unfolding in the kindergarten room. Five butterflies who had been forming in their cocoons for the previous nine days as part of a class project chose that moment to make their debut as winged creatures. The paparazzi, aka every staff member with a camera, were out in full force to observe the moment each one emerged.
