I was in Tenino the other weekend walking in their Oregon Trail Days Parade. I was told by a local that the area is financially challenged. If that is the case, I wonder if many residents use food stamps and rely on public schools and the Head Start program. I wonder if they participate in Social Security and Medicare or if they are younger, are on Medicaid. They might have even been on unemployment as they might have lost their job.

Of course just about all of them vote Republican which amazes me as the Republicans have fought all those programs since they started. President Lyndon Johnson who started many programs to help those disadvantaged said, ‘too many Americans live on the outskirts of hope and poverty -some because of their poverty, and some because of their color, and all too many because of both. Our task is to help replace their despair with opportunity’.

The new Republican Paul Ryan Budget Plan that Mitt Romney supports would cut food stamps and money for schools and the Head Start program along with libraries and NPR. Having already forced the Democrats to cut unemployment time, the Republicans are working to cut even more. They would also cut money for Medicaid and Medicare. The budget would also start the slow cutting of Social Security, (turning it all over to their Wall Street allies), something that we all paid into as insurance so that it would safeguard our later years.

The Ryan Plan would also have those same low income Tenino residents paying taxes for the first time, while the Romney rich would earn even more money in the form of extra tax breaks. The gap between rich and poor /middle class is as big now as it was in the Great Depression. When are we going to realize that the really wealthy aren’t interested in giving us the ability to make it?
